"I don't hate you, I just wish it didn't have to happen this way, I just wish we could go back to the old us and start all back over. I never imagined getting married this way, I never imagined getting kids this way, and I never imagined my life going this way." I sincerely said to him, 'my father cared enough to make Shane sign his rights away all those years ago' I thought to myself.
"Learn from our fathers mistakes Maria, it'll do you some good." That was the last thing he said before walking away.
Maria's POV
I wanted to see my father, I know he didn't want to see me but I wanted to see him. I felt as if this was my goodbye, as if this was me trying to do right by him. I decided that it would be best to do as Mars said, in the end my daughter was very fond of him and they were offering me a better life away from Shane. It wasn't my ideal life but it was something, it was a new start. I felt as if I owed my father an apology, I wanted his forgiveness and I wanted to thank him for trying to protect Kylie before he even knew her.
I knew that this wasn't just going to fall into my lap, I knew that there were going to be good and bad days, maybe more bad than good but it was a new start and I need to show that I'm grateful. I made up my mind that I was going to visit my father but I had to find out where he was first, I decided to make a call to Melissa. I walked into the living room to use the house phone, I didn't have one due to the fact that we never went back to the apartment to get my things. As I was about to pick up the phone Alexander walked into the living room and made his way towards me, I stood there frozen like a child caught with her had in the forbidden cookie jar.
" What are you doing?" He looked at my hand clenched tightly around the house phone.
I raised my eyes to meet his. " I want to make a call to Melissa, I'd like to take Kylie with me to see my father today." I voiced to him, his intense stare made me shake on sight.
He reached forward with his hand barely moving to take the phone out of my grasp while my hands fell to my side. " Don't hold the phone like that." He said in a strained voice, I looked at him confused. Before I could ask him what he was talking about he cleared his throat and spoke.
"You can a wait a while before going to see your father, your new wardrobe is being delivered today along with your basic needs and electronics. Same thing goes for Kylie, as for seeing your father I'll be the one taking you. " With that he held onto my hand and led me out of the living room and towards the the stairs, he took me to the room that I was presently staying in.
" This is my room, you're free to stay here but I want my room back so I'll be using it. You can choose to room with Kylie or I can have one of the maids assign you a room of your choice." I nodded at him, as he dropped my hand and made his way to the foot of the bed to sit he signaled for me to follow his action, I hesitated for a second but then decided to do as he asked.
"I'll assume that Mars filled you in on everything but I figured I should inform you myself, I'm not asking you to sacrifice your life just to follow a few simple rules. I like Kylie she's a great kid but she also have her cons which I'm willing to work with. " He angled his body to face mine while I remained quiet.
" You have a choice whether you want to have a wedding or just have us sign the marriage licences." He made sure to hold eye contact to gauge my reaction to his words.
I lowered my eyes from his to reply. "I'd prefer if we just signed, it would make everything easier for the both of us and Kylie. "
"You should never lower your eyes, confident or not." He raised my chin to make eye contact with him, I nodded at his words.
"Please use your words, as my wife it's expected that you carry yourself a certain way." I know what it was like, my father is a multimillionaire himself I expected no different from Alexander Romano.
" Can I ask you a question?" I asked waiting for his reaction
" What is it ?" He replied back
" Whatever happens in the end, can you promise me to protect Kylie?" His face remained void of any emotion.
" You have my word. Is there anything else?" Before I could answer him there was a slight knock on the door.
" Mr Romano, your delivery is here." I assumed it was one of the maids who came to relate the message. He dismissed her and excused himself to have everything brought up stairs, I'm pretty sure it was the things that he got for Kylie and I. I could breathe now knowing that he promised to take care of her, I smiled to myself I felt a sense of peace wash over me.
He left the room but the maid remained at the door. " I was instructed to have you choose a room mam." She voiced the instructions she was given.
I smiled at her before replying " You can call me Maria, what your name ?"
" I'm Mia, Mr Romano wouldn't appreciate me addressing you by your first name mam."
" Well just don't let him hear you, feel free to show me the available rooms." I winked at her on my way out the door.
I already knew that I'd prefer a room close to Kylie's, I informed her to which she nodded and abide by my request. I was setting into my new room when Xavier entered, I raised my head to look at him but refrained from saying anything.
" You know I said I was sorry." He started off the unwanted conversation, I abandoned what I was doing to speak to him.
" I really don't want to have this conversation." I moved to sit on the bed waiting on his reply.
" Are you really going to marry him ?" He changed the subject
" I don't really have a choice, in the end it seems like it's the best decision for Kylie. "
" Alexander is not like that, he believes that everyone should have a choice in life. If you really wanted to stop him you would've tried a little harder and a little word of advice don't use Kylie's name in your defense." His argument confused me a bit, why did he oppose to me marrying his brother and why he did he try to make it look like I actually wanted this?
"Xavier I don't appreciate you saying that and I don't know why me agreeing to marry your brother would make you so unsettled." I was trying to understand where he was coming from, I thought he would've been happy that I actually came to terms with everything.
" Can't you see it, you don't even know him. Did he even mention the fact that his ex girlfriend of six years is pregnant with his child? " His ex girlfriend's pregnancy was news to me but I still don't get why he would choose to bring that up now.
" I still don't get why you would bring that up now, what good does it do in this situation ?" I directed the question to him.
" It's to show you that you shouldn't marry him, if were to choose between the two of us I should've been you first option. I was there when you needed me most, you weren't even aware that he existed. " So this is what that was all about, Xavier wanted me to be with him but he had to know that it wasn't my choice I wasn't the one who made any sort of deal with his brother.
"This marriage agreement was not my doings, it was a deal made between Alexander and Mars. I had nothing to do with it, you should know that." I tried to get him to understand
" Then choose me, put your foot down and tell them you're not going to do it. Choose me Maria show me you don't actually want to be with him." It was obvious that Xavier had some sort of feelings for me but I already had an agreement with Alexander, I will not sacrifice my daughter's safety for anyone's selfishness.
" I can't, I'm being offered a silver lining here I can't turn that down." He looked disappointed by my answer but there was nothing that I could do about it.
" If that's what you really want then so be it, I wish you and Kylie the best." He left the room and conversation without looking back, I was conflicted but truly a part of me accepted my faith with Alexander Romano.
