Blythe's POV
"Hey! I just cleaned that!"
She pushed me gently away from the sink. Walang karasahan, purely out of cleanliness that's why she's scolding me right now.
"But it's more tasty this way." To prove my point, I dipped my pinky finger on the sauce I'm making and motioned it towards her. Nagbibiro lang naman talaga ako pero hindi ko ine-expect na papatulan niya ang mga ganong biro ko.
Before I even had the chance to retrieve my hand, she grabbed it and sucked the finger I'm holding out. I felt her hot tongue licked the hell out of my helpless pinky.
"Masarap nga. Pero ako na diyan. Nagkakalat ka lang eh."
Natulos ako sa kinatatayuan ko. My hand froze in the air at nakatitig lang ako doon. She doesn't seem to give a damn on why I suddenly became petrified because she continued to work her way around the kitchen while I'm here, wide-eyed and looking like a complete idiot.
My hands eventually found its way on my chest. It's an automatic response whenever I can feel my heart racing. I'd hate to die like this. I refuse to die like this oh god. Bakit ba ako napunta sa ganitong sitwasyon?
Let me tell you briefly what happened....
It has been two weeks since I started operation truce on Auburn. I did not expect the outcome of my plan to be this thriving and exciting at the same time.
After that dinner incident where I secretly watched her eat from my bedroom door—it may sound creepy as fuck, but I truly enjoyed seeing her get satisfied while eating the food I 'unintentionally' prepared for her, everything went surprisingly smooth.
We bumped into each other again the morning after but because she said she needs to use the bathroom first, I just did my usual morning routine. And just like I planned, I brewed coffee that is good for two and deliberately left it in the brewer for her to drink. Ganun lang yun. Walang imikan pero wala ring bangayan.
It was the first peaceful morning I had since I moved in. Until...
Friday last week...
"Boss, di mo ba sasagutin yang phone mo? Kanina pa natunog." Chris shoved me my blinking phone, an indication that someone's calling.
I look it up and saw that it's an unregistered numbered. Hindi ko sinasagot ang tawag galing sa mga unknown numbers pero may nag udyok sa akin na sagutin ang isang ito. I went out of the KTV room where my team are singing their hearts out.
"Hello?"
"Hey, did I disturb you?" sabi ng nasa kabilang linya.
It's Auburn. Except I don't wanna assume things when it comes to her. "I'm sorry who's this?" Natatawa ako sa sarili ko coz' I can see her eyes rolling right now.
"It's Auburn. Can I ask you a favor? Can you pick me up?"
Tumaas ang kilay ko pagkuwa'y napangiti sa loob loob. She wants me to pick her up now, huh? "Why? Wala ka bang sasakyan?" Come to think of it, I never saw her driving a car before.
"I do not own a car."
Kunwari ay napasinghap ako. "What?! A Romano who doesn't own a car?! Are you for real?"
"That's because—" I heard her let out a sigh, withdrawing the words she's about to say. "Just tell me know if you can pick me up."
"I'll think about it." I kept myself from laughing.
"I meant now. Can you pick me up NOW."
My eyebrow shot upwards at her demanding tone. "Ikaw na nga itong humihingi ng pabor ikaw pa tong lakas maka-utos. Bahala ka nga diyan!"
"Hey wait! I'm sorry! Sorry. Ako nalang kasi ang naiiwan dito sa stadium. Wala ng maghahatid sa akin." Medyo may nahimigan akong takot sa boses nito.
"Did you try Grab? I'm with some colleagues pa kasi."
"I've been booking for a driver for two hours now."
Friday nga pala ngayon. Rush hour pa kaya pahirapang makakuha ng Grab. "Mag jeep ka nalang."
"The nearest Jeepney Bay from here is a one-hour walk. Di ko na maihakbang mga paa ko sa pagod."
"Did you try calling your sisters or parents for a driver?" imposible namang hindi magawan ng paraan ng mga kapatid niya na masundo siya.
"Did you think I haven't called them first? They were all busy. Gaia was kind enough to give me your contact number so I could call you."
Gaia, huh? For a lawyer she kinda suck for keeping personal informations. I will deal with her next time.
Ang dami niyang excuses, I told myself. But I still found myself getting worried nang biglang wala na akong narinig na nagsasalita sa kabilang linya. Tiningnan ko ang phone ko at nakitang hindi naman niya binaba ang tawag.
"Hey, you still there?" I asked.
"Y-Yep. If you can't pick me up maybe I'll just spend the night here. Sorry to bother you."
"H-Hey!" I think I stopped her from hanging up dahil sumagot siyang muli. "I will pick you up. Saan ka ba?" she gave me her location.
One problem though, because when she saw me in a motorbike, she kinda freaked out at muntikan ng magpaiwan nalang. Pero nakauwi naman kami ng maayos except I was laughing at her the whole time dahil ang higpit ng kapit niya sa akin even after we parked on our apartment's parking lot. She ranted for a little bit but eventually ended up laughing with me.
That's the first time I saw her laugh.
Sunday afternoon....
Uuwi dapat ako ng Mirage kahapon but it started to rain so hard, and the streets around Metro Manila are beginning to flood. I could easily maneuver around the traffic using my motorbike pero pinagalitan ako ni Mum nang tumawag ako sa kanya dahil malakas na din ang ulan at paniguradong magiging basang sisiw ang kalalabasan ko. So I stayed home during the weekend—we stayed home rather because even Auburn's training was cancelled.
On Saturday, we locked ourselves in our room. Hindi ko alam kung ano ang ginagawa ni Auburn sa sariling kuwarto sa buong maghapon na iyon. As for me, I did most of my pending reports and presentations for the upcoming Science Week.
Gabi na ng Sabado nang magkita kami sa sala. Balot siya ng kumot at nanonood ng movie. I went to the kitchen only to find a food to eat. Sopas to be exact. Hindi ko sana iyon papansinin dahil na din sa rules namin but she simply said "eat that" from the living room. Di na ako nagpakipot dahil gutom na din naman ako.
Malakas pa rin ang ulan ngayong araw pero dahil tinatamad na akong maging tamad, I decided to clean the whole apartment. I vacuumed the floor of the living room and my room; I mopped the kitchen floor and cleaned the CR. While doing so, nilunod ko ang tunog ng ulan ng malakas na music. Wala na akong pake sa rule namin na Silence. Always. dahil mas nakakapagtrabaho ako with music on. Hindi naman siguro maiingayan si Auburn dahil sound proof naman ang mga kuwarto dito.
I was jumping up and down on the couch while lip syncing when she suddenly showed up from behind. I lost my balance and was about to fell face first on the floor but she stopped me from falling by obstructing herself in front of me. My supposed-to-be-final-destination-kind-of-death did not happen, ladies and gentlemen. Her arms were around my waist and my hands were clutching her shoulders for support.
"Stupid." An amused smile was playing at the corner of her mouth. Then she lets go leaving me dumbfounded.
Last Wednesday....
Third day of Science Week. The university we will visit today is Dana's university. I'm kinda excited about today dahil makikita ko ang kapatid ko. Medyo may kalayuan iyon mula dito kaya inagahan ko ang gising para mauna akong gumamit ng banyo. Hindi ko namamalayan ang pagtakbo ng oras at napatagal ang pag-iisip ko sa shower. Literal na shower thoughts mga siz! If it wasn't for the harsh knocks on the door, hi di pa siguro ako magigising sa pag de-daydream.
"Jesus Christ, Blythe! I thought we had an agreement on this?!" sigaw ni Auburn mula sa labas.
"Sorry! Heto na lalabas na!" I did not bother drying myself. Basta ko nalang sinuot ang bath robe ko at lumabas. Tumutulo pa ang tubig mula sa buhok ko pero hinayaan ko nalang iyon.
I literally bumped on Auburn when I stepped out of the bathroom. "Sorry, sorry." Nakangiwi kong paumanhin sa kanya.
Sa tangkad niya ay kailangang tumingala pa ako para makita ang mukha niya. Taliwas sa inaasahan kong nag aapoy na mga mata niya ay iba ang nakita ko doon. She's eyeing me so intensely like I'm some sort of a delicacy ready be devoured. Now, not that I was over myself but her eyes, damn, her eyes! They just said it all. Hindi naman ako makalabas ng tuluyan dahil nakaharang nga siya sa mismong pintuan.
I cleared my throat, "Excuse me?" at doon lang siya natauhan.
"Please consider other people next time you want to daydream inside the shower." Iyon lang at pinagbagsakan niya ako ng pintuan.
"Geez, I said I'm sorry!" I said loud enough for her to hear.
I was singing to myself as I change that morning. Parang hindi ko alintana ang pagsusungit ng housemate ko kanina. Palabas na ako ng kuwarto nang maabutan ko siyang nagmamadaling nagsusuot ng sapatos. Halos hindi na rin ata ito nagpatuyo ng buhok dahil hinayaan nalang din niyang basa iyon. She's wearing her usual running attire. I kinda felt guilty dahil mukhang late na siya at ako ang dahilan.
"Hey, sorry again if I have to use the bathroom first. Sa Manila pa kasi ang punta ko kaya inagahan ko. Hindi ko naman alam na maaga ka rin pala dapat ngayon." Hingi ko ng paumanhin sa kanya.
She stopped tying her shoes midway like she realized something from what I've said. "Sa Manila ka pupunta, sabi mo?"
"Y-Yes, why?"
There was a slight panic in her eyes as she took a step towards me. Ngayon ko lang siya nakitaan ng ganoong emosyon na parang maiiyak na. "Can you drive me to Quirino Grandstand? May relay race kami ngayon at late na ako sa call time. Please?" Niyugyog pa niya ang mga balikat ko.
"S-Sure." I didn'tknow how to respond especially when she's this close. Nakatitig lang kasi ako sa kanya.
"Like right now, Blythe." she snapped at me.
"Oh shoot, right now, yes, uhhh, let me just grab my keys first," I stopped as I realized something. "Teka, eh diba sabi mo last time ayaw mo ng umangkas sa motor ko?"
"No time for that! Let's go!"
Kung katulad kami ng dati na nagbabangayan, nunca ko siyang gagawan ng pabor katulad nito. Heck, I wouldn't even look at her and would be disgusted to hang around her. Pero bakit ngayon parang nararamdaman ko nalang ang sarili ko na nais siyang makasama? Like I have to constantly need to make an effort to make her see me?
I shall brainstorm on that soon. But first, I needed to save this damsel who is half-distressed.
Present...
"I told you we should have add more salt. Walang lasa." nagrereklamo ako dahil bland at walang kalasa lasa ang ginawa naming sauce ng spaghetti.
"Anong wala? Gusto mo bang magkabato sa kidneys? Ang alat na nga nito eh." Depensa niya.
Yes, we cooked a food together. I didn't know how we end up to an agreement like this pero natagpuan ko nalang ang sarili ko na um-oo kaninang nagtanong siya kung gusto ko ba ng spaghetti for dinner.
Nagtalo pa kami nung una kung filipino style o italian ang gagawin naming sauce. We ended up experimenting at pinahalo nalang ang iba't ibang klase ng tomato sauce at ketchup. Edible namang tingnan ang niluto namin at di naman masama ang lasa niyon.
Wala na ulit nagsalita sa amin. I can't believe I'm eating with the snarkiest Romano right now. Not to mention we cooked this food together. What a milestone! Parang gusto kong magpa-party dahil nagawa kong makipag close sa kanya. I can't wait to tell Dana and Hali about this. They are afterall the people who encouraged me to get to know Auburn.
I was only focused on work this last few weeks until I get to spend time with her after work. Lagi akong nauunang umuuwi sa kanya at medyo nadidisappoint ako tuwing naabutan kong walang tao sa loob ng apartment. Pero kapag dumarating na siya ay tila bata akong nakaabang sa pagdating ng mga magulang dahil nagliliwanag bigla ang mundo ko. She on the other hand never showed emotions but that's fine with me. She would just greet me "Good evening" tapos papasok na siya sa kuwarto. I know, I'm weird pero kontento na ako doon. May mga times pa rin na masungit siya at parang gusto niya akong sigawan pero mas marami na iyong mga times na magkasundo kami.
And the last two weeks were one heck of a realization for me. Dana was right. She's not as bad as I thought. Pero napasobrahan lang ata ako.
I look at her at the side of my eyes and I instantly felt that crazy thumping in my chest. I'm not stupid not to know what that is. I did not ace my whole college life just to get clueless on things like these.
I boldly and shamelessly stared at her. May kumalat na sauce sa gilid ng mga labi niya at napangiti ako dahil doon.
"What?" nakataas ang kilay na sabi niya.
I find her cute na ngayon kapag nagsusungit. I bite my lower lip to keep myself from smiling. "May sauce ka sa labi, Miss."
Iniangat niya ang kamay para punasan iyon. I don't know what came to me but I stopped her hands midway. I stood up from my seat and dipped my head to meet hers.
And I found myself tasting the saucy lips of Auburn Romano.
