"your accent is so lovely!" diana exclaimed in my ear. all the girls in the avonlea schoolhouse nodded in agreement.
"where are you from, again?" josie asked. i turned to look at her.
"i'm from scotland," i replied with a smile. apparently my accent is 'lovely, romantic, and amazing', according to the girls.
i've been living in avonlea for about three months, almost as much as cole mackezie has. he's one of my closest friends, and we get along so well. i don't know too many of the other boys, besides gilbert and billy.
billy. if i could choose to be with anyone, i would choose to be with him. ever since i saw him, he gave me butterflies. his smile sends my heart racing.
"scotland sounds like such a nice place," tillie sighed. ruby sighed with her, and i laughed.
"yes, it is," i agreed. we fell back into a lovely chatter, until the sound of the door opening stopped all conversations. it was cole.
"hello, cole!" i greeted him, but his face showed deep signs of anger. his jaw was clenched, and his eyes held hate. he was staring right at billy.
"you! you destroyed our safe place!" he yelled, and ran at billy. my heart stopped. billy stood up to meet cole, and the two of them started throwing punches, they fell, and wrestled on the floor.
"no, stop!" i exclaimed. i ran to them and put myself between them. they didn't notice me, and they knocked into me. i lost my balance and fell.
right into the furnace.
"y/n!" the girls screamed. i pulled myself away from the burning hot furnace with a burnt ear. i cried out in pain. billy and cole stopped their fighting and watched me.
"what are you standing there for?" gilbert questioned them. he stepped forward. "help me pick her up!" billy rushed to my side, and the two of them lifted me up.
"i'm so so sorry," cole called to me. i nodded.
"it's not your fault," i said through tears. gilbert and billy escorted me outside.
"y/n, i didn't see you. i didn't mean to—," billy started, but i shushed him.
"it—it's al—alright," i stuttered. billy was supporting me, but i leaned away and fell from both the boys' grasps. billy pulled me up right before i hit the ground.
some of the girls started to call gilbert back to the schoolhouse. he turned to look at me and billy.
"is it alright if i go back?" he asked. i nodded.
"go," billy agreed. gilbert ran back towards the schoolhouse, and billy and i went the opposite way.
we walked in silence for a while, with his arm around my waist to support me. i still got butterflies, even in a time like this. i clutched the side of my head, hoping it wasn't burnt too bad.
"i'm so sorry, y/n. i can't believe i was that reckless. i let you get hurt!" billy exclaimed, angry at himself. i smiled.
"i forgive you. it was an accident," i reassured him. he sighed.
"i just...really like you, and i'm so mad that i got you hurt," he confessed. i stopped in my tracks.
"you do?" i whispered. he laughed, but nodded. he reached for my hand.
"yes i do. but i'm pretty dumb for getting the girl i like burnt!" he exclaimed. i laughed, and at that, he smiled.
"thank you. for it all," i replied.
"even the burn?"
"no! you know what i mean!" i laughed.
"i know. come on, let's get you home," he said. and with that, he took my hand, we were on our way.
i almost forgot i was burnt.
