tonight's the night. the town of avonlea decided to have its first annual dance!

all the girls in the avonlea schoolhouse were chattering busily over lunch, talking about their dresses.

"mine's purple, with lace and extremely puffy shoulders!" josie pye bragged. the other girls responded with many compliments.

"mine's green!"

"mine's pink!"

"mine's yellow!" all the girls were giving their input on their dance attire. then y/n piped up.

"my dress is dark blue, and it is so beautiful!" y/n exclaimed. the girls squealed.

"how lovely, y/n!" diana replied. she beamed at y/n. the two were best friends; have been for ten years.

a little ways away, a group of boys were talking. gilbert blythe sat among them, but he wasn't engaged in the conversation. he was too busy watching y/n chatter happily with the girls.

"earth to blythe, earth to blythe," billy teased. gilbert snapped out of his trance and turned towards billy.

"funny, andrews. so what's everyone talking about?" gilbert asked. billy laughed.

"we're talking about the dance. i'm taking josie," he said. the other boys high fives him.

then the group of guys turned towards gilbert. "who are you taking?" they asked.

"well, i haven't asked her yet, but i want to go with  y/n," gilbert sighed. the boys whooped and hollered.

"man, you are so whipped for her," billy chuckled. gilbert blushed. he turned, and saw that y/n's eyes were on him. he shyly waved. she returned the wave with a smile. the other girls turned to see gilbert, and they all squealed (ruby had gotten over her crush on gilbert a little while ago).

back at y/n's group, the girls were squealing.

"oh my goodness, you need to go with gilbert!" anne exclaimed. the girls feverishly agreed. y/n blushed. she wanted to go with him, but wasn't sure if he liked her. the girls thought so, but y/n was blind to love.

"i would like that, but i don't know if he likes me,"    y/n said. all the girls groaned.

"please, he's basically in love with you!" jane exclaimed. the girls agreed, and y/n blushed.

at the boys group, they have reached a decision. "okay, gilbert, you are going to ask y/n to the dance after school," moody said. billy agreed.

"you've got to, man. she has the hots for you, everyone can tell," billy added. gilbert smiled.

"fine, i'll do it," gilbert said. "thanks for your help!" and with that, he walked outside to get some air.

•a few hours later•
it was after school, and everyone was waiting for the inevitable. word traveled fast, so everyone knew gilbert was going to ask y/n to the dance. that is, everyone except y/n.

everyone lingered in the schoolhouse, obviously waiting for something to happen. y/n was wondering why people kept glancing at her.

gilbert slowly walked up to her as she was putting on her jacket. "hey, can i walk you home?" he asked her. y/n nodded.

"yes you may," she said with a smile. he returned it.

"alright," he replied, and waited for her to be ready. y/n gently put on her hat and turned to look at him.

"i'm ready," she announced. gilbert chuckled and held the door open for her. they both stepped out into the cold breeze, and they were off.

as they walked, their hands brushed many times. each time it happened, gilbert would glance at y/n, and she'd give him a soft smile.

after about the tenth time, gilbert reached over and intertwined their fingers.

"gilbert," y/n whispered. he stopped in the middle of the dirt path and stared into her eyes.

"y/n, i really like you. i was wondering if you would like to go to the dance with me. if not, that's alright," gilbert explained. y/n needed a second to process his words.

"i like you too, i would love to go with you gilbert!" y/n exclaimed and threw her arms around him. he staggered back, surprised by her embrace, but he soon wrapped his arms around her.

when she pulled away, gilbert grabbed her hand again, and walked her home.

as they walked up to y/n's house, gilbert spoke up. "i guess i'll pick you up at 7, then." y/n grinned.

"i guess you will," she replied. he let go of her hand and walked back down the dirt path. once he reached the fence on the outskirts of y/n's house, he turned and waved. she waved back. once he was out of sight, she ran into her house to tell her mom all about what just happened.
