spring has just started. spring was y/n's favorite season, up until today.

it was promising to be a good day, until the walk to school. the sky suddenly turned gray, and little droplets of rain started to fall from the heavens.

"of course," y/n groaned. she was in the woods, and the woods tend to get very muddy in the rain. so she decided to make a run for it. at the expense of her pretty white shoes.

y/n quite liked rain, but not on the way to school. it was a very tragical circumstance. y/n ran through the woods, squealing every time mud splashed on her tights. she'd definitely be late.

when she arrived at the schoolhouse, it was obvious that class started a little while ago. luck was not on y/n's side today.

she clambered through the door and shook off her soaked coat. every head in the class turned to gape at her. she smiled weakly, then put up her hat. she quickly ran to her seat, so mr. phillips wouldn't get too mad at her. it was futile.

"miss y/l/n, blackboard...now," the teacher, mr. phillips, said between gritted teeth. y/n's head sank.

"mr. phillips, that's not fair. she was caught in the rain!" a voice exclaimed. y/n looked up. it was gilbert blythe.

y/n slightly blushed. she just started having a crush on him about a month ago, but didn't tell anyone. ruby and josie would go berserk.

"fine. you too gilbert. blackboard, now." mr. phillips growled. y/n gave gilbert an apology as they walked up. gilbert shook his head.

"just standing up for my girl," he said, but soon realized what escaped his lips. he blushed a dark red. you did too.

and so you stood. for the whole day. by the end of the day, your legs were tired and you were so hungry. diana and ruby offered you some of their food, but you politely declined.

"alright, get outta here," mr. phillips said at the end of the day. you sighed, and slowly walked across the schoolhouse to grab your coat. you had dried mud on your pretty white shoes, and you were not happy.

"can i walk you home?" gilbert asked timidly behind you. you smiled.

"that would be lovely, mr. blythe," you chuckled. he smiled and pulled on his coat.

"after you, miss," he said and held the door open. you stepped out into the cool spring air. it looked like it was ready to rain.

"we'd better hurry," y/n said. gilbert nodded, and they were off.

they walked in silence for the first few minutes, until y/n spoke up. "i'm very sorry you had to stand at the blackboard today, gilbert. that wasn't fair."

"well, he shouldn't have treated you like that," gilbert explained. y/n smiled at him.

"you sure are something, mr. blythe," she teased. just as she finished her sentence, it started raining. again.

"quick, over here!" gilbert exclaimed, and the two ran through the woods to a hollowed out tree. it was down pouring now, much worse than this morning.

gilbert and y/n ran under the tree, but it was a tight fit. y/n held her breath. she's never been this close to a boy, much less gilbert blythe. she blushed slightly.

"you know, there's been something i've wanted to talk to you about," gilbert said quietly. y/n met his eyes. he seemed really nervous for once in his life.

"what is it?" y/n asked gently.

"well..." gilbert paused and rubbed his hands together. "i like you. a lot. heck, i think i'm falling in love with you!" y/n stared.

"i feel the same way," she explained. his face broke out in a smile.

"can i kiss you?" he asked softly. y/n nodded.

"you may."

they leaned in. gilbert wrapped his arms around her waist, and her hands flew to his hair. he smiled in the kiss at her embrace.

after a few minutes, the two pulled apart breathless.

"you are amazing, y/n y/l/n. simply amazing," gilbert said. then he interlocked your fingers with his, and you two waited out the storm.
