Chapter 7: She could be the One

The sound of Miles entering my room automatically made me pull up duvet over my face and groan. "Go away Miles." I said but I felt him sit on the left side of my bed.
"Forgot me already Cuz?" A familiar female voice replied instead
To my excitement, I immediately sat up on my bed and saw the one person I miss the most....... my cousin Skylar Evans!
"Sky!" I practically shouted before I hugged her
She pulled away with that grin I missed of hers. "You know, I'm kinda offended that you thought I was Miles of all people. I'm only a year older than you, you know." She joked which made us burst out in laughter
"Sorry Cuz, Miles usually storms in my room whenever he feels like it so I thought you were him," I explained. "How long are you staying?"
"A long time actually, I kinda came alone since mom and dad are skiing in Colorado," She replied. "I cooked you breakfast."
I was shocked at the fact that Skylar cooks now. A year ago, she tried to cook and almost burned down Aunt Emily and Uncle Steven's house.
"Seriously? You almost burned down your house last time I checked." I said and she rolled her eyes
"That was a year ago. Can we just go down for breakfast? 7hrs and 49mins from Ottawa is a major jetlag," She said in an exaggerating tone
I playfully rolled my eyes at her complaint. "Fine. I'm starving anyway."
We caught up with each other's lives while going down the stairs and into the kitchen. Although, Sky suddenly became silent when we reached the kitchen. Sitting on the closest stool to us was Zach in his favorite black tank top. I saw all the joy drained from Skylar's face when she saw her ex boyfriend sitting four feet away from her.
****FLASHBACK 1 YEAR AGO****
Z A C H
I was at the back of West Side High's main building next to my girlfriend Skylar who was arguing with me. The stupid hangover I had kept getting worse by the minute which made me shout back at her.
"Look, I'm sorry ok?" I said in a calm tone
She looked at me in a disappointed way. "Why Zach? Do you know what today is?"
Tears started to run down her face while I thought hard about the answer to her question. "I don't know Sky."
She wiped the tears running down her cheeks before she glared at me. "I can't believe you! You're breaking up with me on our first anniversary!"
"I can't do this anymore Sky!" I shouted back
The look of hurt was shown on her red as a tomato face. "I shoudn't have thought a single bit that you've changed! If this is what you want, fine. I'm leaving for Ottawa tommorrow, goodbye Zach."
Just like that, she left me with pain and sorrow shown all over her face.....
I thought she could be the one......
****BACK TO THE PRESENT****
Z A C H
There she was, the girl I hurt about a year ago standing four feet away from me with the same expression she had when I broke up with her. I saw Cam's right hand giving her left hand a reassuring squeeze when she noticed that her cousin was uneasy with my presence. Cam took the seat on my left while Skylar sat on the other side of her.
Miles and Connor's laughter suddenly died down when their sister and cousin sat at the table. "Awkward." Miles muttered a little too loudly which earned him a smack on the arm by Connor.
Michael cleared his throat loudly. "Well, first time you kids are quiet,"
"If you only knew Dad," Miles said and Connor elbowed him this time. "Ok ok I get it, I'll shut up."
"Skylar that's Zach Parker," Michael said nodding at my direction
If there's one person in West Side that doesn't know about mine and Skylar's past relationship, that's Michael.
"We've met each other already Uncle Mike," Skylar replied shortly while ignoring the glances I shot at her.
"Well, you two could make the perfect couple if you stay long enough," Michael said which made both Skylar and I choke on our drinks. "What? I was just joking around."
"Uh Dad Miles, Mila, Zach and I are headed to school now so-" Connor tried to change the subject
"Why don't you bring Skylar with you? I'm sure she'd like to see her old school again," Michael suggested
"No need Uncle Mike," Skylar replied immediately
"Oh go on Skylar, you'll just be all by yourself here," Michael added
"Uh sure why not," Skylar said with fake enthusiasm
This is going to be the most awkward morning of my life.....

C A M I L A
The car ride to school was the most quiet one I've ever had. Well, except for the fact that Miles blasted some music on the radio which made it even more awkward when Thank U, Next by Ariana Grande played.
Of all days, why did a song about exes have to play on the day Zach and Skylar were in a car together??
I told Skylar to go home since she looked pretty jetlag during second period. She ended up being asked to go home by some sophomore and junior guys that tried hitting on her all morning.
Thank God she's not one of those sluts.
The bell finally rang and I caught up to Ethan on the way to the cafeteria. "Hey Mila, my mom said you and Parker took me home last night?" He asked and I nodded
"Yeah.... You were really drunk last night," I replied and he shrugged
"Did I say anything weird?" He said, bringing up the one thing I don't want to talk about.
Except for the fact that you confessed how you're falling for me. "Nothing too weird." I lied
"Well, sorry for all the things I said. Most of the stuff I say when I'm drunk really aren't true," He explained before we entered the noisy cafeteria.
I can imagine my 7th Grade self getting hurt by that. Thank God I'm over him.
We spotted Rye and Chloe at a table the furthest away from the cafeteria doors. Ethan and I walked over to their table and sat side by side.
For some reason, the two usually fighting over the most random stuff are now eating silently and obviously avoiding eye contact.
"What happened with you two?" Ethan spoke up which made the two of them look up at him
"Nothing," Chloe replied shortly before facing me. "I heard Skylar's back."
I simply nodded. "Figures, Zach was silent through first and second period." Rye chimed in
"You mean Zach's ex girlfriend Skylar?" Ethan asked with a shocked expression. "Didn't she move to Ottawa or something?"
I let out a sigh simply because I wasn't really in on gossiping about my cousin and her ex boyfriend. "Um Ethan do you want to work on the project today?" I changed the subject
Ethan nodded way too enthusiastically. "Yeah yeah sure, we can work at my place at 4pm. Sounds good?"
I nodded before we all went back to eating our food. I was almost done with my bowl of mixed fruit when my phone quacked a message. I unlocked it and saw the message Zach sent me on Insta.
Zach:
Practice at Xian's 6pm today. If you wanna come
Me:
Sure. Where r u???
Zach:
Detention 4 making fun of Shakespeare
Me:
Why didn't I think of that
Zach:
Haha see you later Cam
I smiled before I put my phone back where it was before. I caught Chloe looking over my shoulder which probably meant she has read mine and Zach's conversation. She wiggled her eyebrows at me and I rolled my eyes in response.
"Never gonna happen Chloe," I answered her teasing
"Why not?" She asked which caught Rye and Ethan's attention
Rye rolled his eyes when he finally got what Chloe meant. "I still don't get why you ship Zach and Mila."
Chloe turned to him with an annoyed expression. "What? They're kinda cute together."
What?! Me and Zach together? Never gonna happen.
"It's never gonna happen Chloe," I replied just before the bell rang for third period.

After working on the project at Ethan's, Zach surprisingly picked me up to go band practice at Xian's.
I sat on the passenger seat next to the unusually quiet Zach with an unreadable look on his face. Knowing Zach, it probably has something to do with Skylar because he hasn't really smiled at all since this morning.
I couldn't take the silence anymore so I said. "Zach, is this about Sky?"
He looked up at me through the small mirror for a split second then looked back at the road. "Was it that obvious?"
"Well, yeah kinda," I shrugged
He let out a sigh. "It doesn't matter."
"C'mon, where's the Zach I know and get annoyed by?" I joked which made a small crooked smile appear on his face.
"Know what? Let's just leave all the worries behind," He said giving me a sideways look
I nodded. "I second that."
We ended up singing, well more like yelling at the top of lungs to songs we knew that played on his car's radio all the way to Xian's house.
We eventually got to practice after the guys and I almost emptied the pantry filled with snacks. Jared, Kyle, Xian and Zach all sounded really great together even without a vocalist.
Gotta say, they sound even better since the last time I heard them.
Once practice was over, I decided to look at the X4 song book. "Hey Mila. Glad you could join us." Said a familiar voice
I looked up to see Jared the drummer of the group with his monthly color of hair which was at the moment red. "Hey J, I'm pretty glad I got to jam with you guys too."
He leaned against the wall next to me and noticed that I was looking through the song book. "So, what's your favorite song of ours?"
"I kinda like the last song we played um C.E.M.E I'm pretty sure. You guys should release it," I replied and Jared's grin grew bigger
"Not surpised you like it. It is the song my brown haired guitarist homeboy wrote about you," He explained
Zach wrote a song about me? Weird, he never told me about it....
I was about to ask Jared why Zach wrote a song about me when Zach told me we were going.
I wasn't really surprised when he pulled up on our favorite diner's carpark. We entered the diner and it went so silent that we could hear a clock ticking. All the girls on different booths stared at us well, mostly Zach as we made our way to the closest booth.
Two freshman girls walked past us and I could just hear their whispered conversation. "She's so lucky! The guy is such a hottie." One of them said
"I know right? It's like Noah Centineo and Zac Efron in one!" The other replied before they were out of our sights.
I could see an obnoxious smirk creeping up on Zach's face.
Seriously? Zac Efron and Noah Centineo in one? Plus they 'accidently' passed by us.
"Proves that I can pass up to be a Hollywood celebrity," Zach said in a coky tone and I rolled my eyes at him.
"They make it sound like you're Zac Efron and Noah Centineo's kid," I replied and he bursted out laughing.
"That's the weirdest thing you've ever said Cam," He said between his laughter
"Well, I just found out that you wrote a song about me," I said and his laughter immediately died down
"How did you know?" He asked with a raised brow
"Let's just say I have connections," I said in a fake serious tone and he playfully rolled his eyes at me. "Why did you bring me here anyway?"
"I need you to do me a favor," he replied directly
"Like what?" I asked curiously
"I need you to help me get Skylar back,"
