Sitting in Dylan's bedroom as two sixteen year olds who were best friends, he was staring up at his ceiling.
"Do you think we'll ever find the one? Our soulmates?" He asked after a prolonged silence.
You stared at him for a moment, you'd thought about it a lot, mainly because you had a crush on Dylan but he could never know.
"I don't know... maybe." You shrugged, glancing out of his window, watching the moon in the darkening sky.
"What if I never find love? I want to find love when I'm young so I can spend as much time as possible with them as I can." He admitted, twiddling him thumbs as he crossed his arms over his stomach.
You averted your gaze from the window to look at him, your eyes softening slightly as you observed how peaceful he looked as he stared up at the ceiling.
"I'm sure you will, Dyl. Any girl would be lucky to be with you." You said, meaning it wholeheartedly.
"Y/n?" He asked, a sudden thought appearing in his mind.
"Yeah?"
"In ten years... if we both haven't found love, maybe we could try, you know... being a couple?" He asked, turning to face you.
You hesitated for a moment, a lot could change in ten years, and making such a huge commitment was a big deal. But you weren't going to pass up the opportunity to date him, even if he didn't feel the same way you felt now.
"Sure, why not?" You smiled slightly, before looking away.
You didn't think the pact for a long time, and over time you lost contact with your best friend as he gained more fame as an actor. You were extremely happy for him of course, and always texted him congratulations whenever he landed a new role.
It was only on his 26th birthday that everything changed.
As you lay on your bed at home binge watching your favourite tv show, your phone rang. When you checked the caller ID you were surprised to see that it was Dylan.
"Hey, big movie star! What's up?" You asked, pausing your show.
Dylan laughed, "uh, hey, y/n. Long time no see!"
"Well we've both been kinda busy lately." You replied, but you both knew it was mainly Dylan who was busy.
"Yeah..." you heard him sigh on the other end of the phone before he spoke again, "so I remembered something the other day on my birthday."
"Oh, you did?" You asked, suddenly curious.
"Mm-hm," he hummed, "so it's been ten years since we made a pact... and I was wondering if you were still up for it?"
You suddenly remembered the pact you'd made with him if you hadn't found 'the one,' but you always thought he had a girlfriend.
"Sure, but I thought you had a girlfriend?" You asked.
"I did. But it didn't work out." Dylan admitted.
You remained dubious, "shouldn't we at least grab coffee first or something? We haven't seen each other in years... who knows how we'll feel when we see each other again."
Of course you knew how you felt, it had been ten years and your feelings for him never went away.
Unbeknownst to you, Dylan had felt the same way for ten years yet he tried to date other girls to get over you since he thought you'd never feel the same. He'd been waiting ten years for this moment, and now he felt ready.
You both quickly arranged to meet at a coffee shop close to you, Dylan couldn't help but feel nervous when the day came. He was worried you wouldn't have the same spark like when you were younger. But his worries quickly disappeared when he saw you walk into the coffee shop, his breath hitched slightly as you took his breath away.
"Y/n." He said softly as you reached him.
Your heart was beating quickly as you finally saw him again after ten years, and your feelings were still there as soon as you laid eyes on him.
"Dylan." You smiled.
That smile made his legs feel like jelly, he couldn't get over how beautiful you were and had always been. You hugged him which he didn't expect, but instinctively he wrapped his arms around you tightly.
"It's been a while." He said as he finally let you go and sat down.
"I know..." you replied as you sat opposite him, "so, how's the family?"
"They're great! They always ask about you." He confessed.
"Oh, really?" You asked.
"Yeah... I'm sorry I've been the worst friend, it's been a pretty hectic few years." Dylan sighed.
"I can tell." You said softly, noticing how tired he looked.
Over coffee the two of you couldn't stop talking and catching up, and soon it felt like all those years of not talking disappeared. Spending time with him was your favourite thing in the world and you dreaded to think of what life would've been like if he hadn't finally reached out.
"I'm sorry it took me so long." Dylan said as the two of you went for a walk after finishing your drinks.
"Don't apologise... I get it." You smiled.
He smiled slightly, "so, uh, about the dating thing... that was totally out of the blue and I didn't think you'd actually still agree to it."
"Dylan..." you hesitated slightly before continuing to say what you wanted to tell him, "I've been in love with you for the past ten years... even long before that, and I don't know why but I could never find anyone that made me feel the same way you make me feel."
Dylan turned to face you, stopping in the middle of the quiet sidewalk, his whiskey-brown eyes gazing into yours, "do you really mean that? Because I've spent all these years being in love with you."
"What about your other girlfriends?" You asked, confused.
"I tried to date other girls to get over you because I thought you'd never feel the same, I mean how could someone as beautiful as you like me?" He said, slightly cupping your cheek, his thumb running over your cheek lightly.
"Because you're irresistible... funny... and you have the most enchanting brown eyes that I could get lost in..." you said in awe.
"Is it crazy that I've fallen even more in love with you over the course of a day?" He asked, leaning closer to you, his nose brushing against yours slightly.
"Not crazy at all, Dylan." You replied, before closing the distance and kissing him — something you'd dreamed of since you were younger, and it was just as magical as you expected.
