The group was created through YG Entertainment's survival show MIXNINE. Contestants were split up based on gender with the top 9 from each given the possibility of debuting. On January 26, 2018 the top 18 for both genders were revealed and it was announced that the top 9 male contestants had won and they would be the group debuting. The group will debut with and be managed and produced by YG.
