This is what you get when you mix a request for angst with a sad song that Courteney is listening to. God forgive me for what I'm about to write.

It was only a smile, but my heart it went wild,
I wasn't expecting that.
Just a delicate kiss, anyone could've missed,
I wasn't expecting that.
Iwaizumi generally hated food shopping, but he hated it even more given the fact that his roommate, Oikawa, had used up all the milk in the fridge then taken off to visit his family for the Christmas holidays without bothering to restock or even tell Iwaizumi that he had used up all the milk, so the boy was stuck in an empty apartment without milk or an annoying roommate to hit.
Sighing to himself, Iwaizumi turned into the dairy isle, walking up until he saw the last carton of milk on the other side and reached out to grab it.
But, at the same time, someone else reached out to grab the same carton of milk and the two ended up grabbing it at the same time.
Looking over at whoever decided to try and steal his milk, Iwaizumi softened up upon seeing it was a girl, her (eye colour) eyes glistening in the light of the supermarket.
She was wearing the normal winter attire - boots, coat, scarf, hat, gloves - but there was something about her rosy cheeks and red nose that made Iwaizumi feel a little sorry for her, and so he let go of the carton of milk and gave the girl a smile.
"Don't worry, you can have it," he insisted, and the girl looked up at him with a little but of guilt in her eyes.
"Are you sure? You look like you're in a hurry; wouldn't it be better for you to take it?" She asked, holding the carton of milk out to Iwaizumi.
Iwaizumi shook his head politely, still smiling at the girl as he reached for a carton of skimmed milk next to the empty block where the semi-skimmed milk used to be.
"Nah, I'm pretty sure you had it first. Plus, my roommate could stand to lose a few pounds," he joked, and the girl giggled a little, a sound that made Iwaizumi's heart race.
Holding her mittened hand out to him, the girl introduced herself.
"I'm L/N Y/N," she said, the smile on her face never fading even after Iwaizumi shook her hand with his own.
"Iwaizumi Hajime," he replied, and the two headed towards the cashier together.
"So, are you from around here or are you just visiting?" Iwaizumi asked as he and Y/N left the store and started walking down the street.
"Oh, no, I live here," Y/N answered, nodding. "My friend and I are sharing an apartment at the college complex just down the road."
"Really?" Iwaizumi asked in shock, looking over at Y/N. "My friend and I live in the same complex too. What floor are you on?"
"Sixth," Y/N answered simply, and Iwaizumi smiled again.
"Mind if I drop you off?" He asked. "I'm on the seventh floor so it'd be no trouble at all."
Y/N's face seemed to light up at the idea of getting to spend more time with Iwaizumi in a day, and she nodded sweetly.
"Sure, I'd love that," she answered, and the two of them spent the duration of the journey home talking about their collage majors and what their roommates were like, and before they even knew it, they were standing outside Y/N's apartment door a little awkwardly.
"Thanks for walking me back, Iwaizumi-kun!" Y/N exclaimed happily, and Iwaizumi smiled.
"No problem at all," he shook his head before deciding it was now or never. "Uh, Y/N, would you mind if I could s-see you again?" He asked with a blush on his face, and Y/N giggled before kissing him on the cheek.
"You're so cute! Of course I don't mind seeing you again!" She answered, and Iwaizumi just wanted to hug her right there and then.
"How does seven-thirty tomorrow sound? We could go for a walk in the park?" He suggested, and Y/N nodded happily.
"Seven-thirty sounds great," she answered, and Iwaizumi couldn't stop himself from smiling.
Awesome, see you then I guess," he said awkwardly before giving Y/N a little wave and walking off down the hall, feeling surprisingly proud of himself.
Did I misread the sign?
Your hand slipped into mine,
I wasn't expecting that
You spent the night in my bed
You woke up and you said:
'Well, I wasn't expecting that'.
"Ooh, what did Iwa-chan get up to while I was away, huh?" Oikawa teased, watching as Iwaizumi slipped on a light blue shirt and navy blue jeans.
"Shut up, Shittykawa, at least I can actually get a date," Iwaizumi hissed, and Oikawa chuckled, rolling off of the bed and going to stand next to Oikawa, who was still standing in front of the mirror.
"Face it, you wouldn't be going on this date if it weren't for me," Oikawa stated, leaning his arm on Iwaizumi and Iwaizumi froze for a moment to consider this.
Oikawa was right.
If he had restocked the milk in the fridge, Iwaizumi would've never gotten the chance to meet Y/N at the supermarket and even ask her out on their date, so, technically, Iwaizumi did owe it to his best friend, but he would never admit it.
Clicking his tongue, Iwaizumi shrugged Oikawa's arm off of his shoulder and grabbed bis black blazer from the wardrobe, slipping it on before grabbing a pair of Vans trainers and putting those on too.
"Ah, well, I guess Iwa-chan is too stubborn to even say thanks to his best friend," Oikawa shrugged, turning around to watch Iwaizumi. "But make sure you make me the best man at your wedding."

"Hey, Hajime," Y/N greeted sweetly when she opened her door and saw Iwaizumi standing there looking very smart and very sexy.
"Wow, you look gorgeous," was all Iwaizumi could get out when he saw Y/N.
All she was wearing was a green sweater with a black vest top underneath it and a pair of navy blue jeans, topped off with a pair of brown boots and a but of red lipstick, nothing too extravagant but she was still extremely flattered.
"Uh, I mean-!" Iwaizumi exclaimed nervously. "You look good! N-not that you look gorgeous- oh, wait, you do look gorgeous! Argh, what am I saying?"
Y/N giggled and Iwaizumi stopped blabbering when she grabbed her coat, hat, scarf and mittens from the side and slipped them on, making her look even more beautiful than she did before.
"You don't look too bad yourself," she replied, and Iwaizumi blushed before pulling his scarf up to cover his red cheeks, causing Y/N to giggle again. "Come on, let's go."
Somewhere during the walk in the park, Iwaizumi had plucked up the courage to hold Y/N's hand, and Y/N made no hesitation in swinging their arms back and forth as they laughed and talked, getting to know eachother better.
By the end of the date, they were already treating eachother like a real couple, and Iwaizumi almost didn't want the night to end, but like all things, he had to drop Y/N off at her apartment other her roommate would not be very happy.
But, instead of taking her back to hers, Iwaizumi offered for her to go back to his, as he knew Oikawa would be there and he wanted to piss him off just a little by bringing a girl home, and Y/N texted her roommate before confirming with Iwaizumi that it was ok for her to stay.
And, from then on, the night was filled with loving kisses and Oikawa actually managing to keep his nose out of Iwaizumi's business for once, something that Iwaizumi hadn't expected at all.
It was only a word, it was almost misheard,
I wasn't expecting that.
But it came without fear, a month turned into a year,
I wasn't expecting that.
Ever since Iwaizumi had asked Y/N to be his girlfiend, everything seemed to change for the two.
The two of them had study dates once every week which would turn into giggly make out sessions either in Y/N or Iwaizumi's room late at night.
But they were both always there for eachother, especially when their final exams started to draw nearer and nearer, and neither of them were surprised when they graduated from college and started to live their own lives.
And time seemed to fly for Iwaizumi and Y/N, as one month together turned into a whole year and they found themselves happier than they had ever been when they were alone.
If you'd not took a chance on a little romance,
When I wasn't expecting that.
Time doesn't take long, three kids up and gone,
I wasn't expecting that.
"Mum, have you seen my shoes?"
"I thought they were in the cupboard, sweetie."
"No, I don't see them there."
"Mummy!"
"Uh, hang on a minute, sweetie! Ask your father, he'll probably know."
"Ok. Dad!"
"Mummy, have you seen my coat?"
"It's over here, honey, here you go."
"Thanks!"
Turning around, Y/N didn't see Iwaizumi standing behind her until she bumped into him.
"Oh, sorry, honey," she chuckled, quickly cupping her husband's cheek and stepping past him to grab her boots. "Are you ok? You look really scared."
"I'm fine, I'm just a little surprised that we already have three kids and we're about to see one of them graduate today," Iwaizumi answered and Y/N smiled, grabbing her's and Iwaizumi's coats and tossing his at him.
"Yeah, pretty scary, but we've come a long way from being a couple of college students ourselves, haven't we?" She asked, and Iwaizumi managed to crack a smile at that.
"Yeah, we have," he agreed, slipping on his coat and a pair of Vans before taking Y/N's hand in his and opening the front door.
"Kids, we're leaving!" Y/N called out to the two remaining kids in the house and soon enough, all four of them were getting into the car and heading to the former Aoba Johsai high school to see their eldest son's graduation.
When the nurses they came, said it's come back again,
I wasn't expecting that.
"I'm sorry, Iwaizumi-san," the nurse apologised, and Iwaizumi couldn't believe this was happening to him. "I'm afraid your wife has cancer. If we'd have known sooner, then we might've been able to save her, but..."
And just like that, Iwaizumi felt his whole world crumble down around him.
It daunted on him that Y/N, his dear beloved Y/N, wasn't going to be in the world anymore.
He wouldn't wake up to her beautiful sleeping face, he wouldn't be able to run his hands through her soft hair or kiss her good morning or good night anymore. He wouldn't be able to tell her that he loves her anymore as much as he wanted to, and he suddenly regretted not being able to spend as much time as he would've liked to with her when he had the chance.
Because now she was ill, and she wasn't going to make it.
"You can see her if you like," the nurse said, and Iwaizumi nodded, not trusting his words to make any sesne or even come out at all, standing up and walking into the hospital room, tears filling his eyes at the sight of Y/N, tubes in her nose and arms, her skin pale and her delicate hair scattered out on the pillow as she slept.
Sitting down next to her, Iwaizumi took her small hand in his larger one, the coldness of her making him shiver in response.
"Y/N..." He whispered, bringing her hand up to his face as he cried.
Iwaizumi had never been one for crying, and he rarely ever did it, but his was different.
His wife...the one who he started a family with, the one he woke up to every morning and the one he slept to every night, was laying here so helpless, and Iwaizumi could do nothing to help.
He really did owe it to Oikawa for the time they first met, as if it weren't for that simple carton of milk, Iwaizumi would've never had the chance to find true love, and lose that love all too soon.
Then you closed your eyes, you took my heart by surprise,
I wasn't expecting that.

I'm sorry for doing this to you guys, and also for cutting out parts of the song but this one-shot took me three hours to perfect and I really didn't want to make it any longer than it already was otherwise it would've gotten boring.
