BoA's name is an acronym for Beat of an Angel. She was discovered by SM Entertainment at a talent search when she was 11. After training for two years she debuted in Korea. When she was 16 she made her Japanese debut with "Listen to MY Heart", which topped the the Oricon charts and marked the first time an album by a Korean artist reached #1 in Japan. She later became one of the first K-pop stars to hit worldwide commercial success. She is also the first foreign artist to have three albums with over 1 million copies sold and one of two artist to have six consecutive number one studio albums on the Oricon charts. She is the first Korean celebrity to collaborate with Akon and Britney Spears helped write one of the songs and recorded a demo with her. BoA has sold over 10 million records since she debuted and is the leader of the Hallyu Wave. Consequently, she is often referred to as the Queen of K-pop.
