Gracie’s POV

Mrs. Awbrey continued sobbing but Amos pulled her away. “She’s not Gracie mom. Let it go and accept that she’s dead,” Amos said harshly but I could tell that even he started to doubt his own words.

“It’s her. I know my daughter when I see her,” Mrs. Awbrey argued. So she was my mom.

“I don’t see how that’s possible. She just came to town with this guy,” Amos said pointing to Derek.

“It’s rude to point little boy,” Derek said annoyed. “Mrs. Awbrey, is your husband by any chance, the James Awbrey. One of the Elders?” Mrs. Awbrey seemed to find her senses and notice that there was another male in front of her. She brushed the tears from her eyes and smiled.

“Why yes he is,” Mrs. Awbrey sniffed. “Please, all of you come in.” She led us inside the house, holding my hand the entire time. I gave Derek a nervous look but he nodded for me to continue. I trusted him on this and followed her in the house and towards a large home office.

“James dear, there’s someone here to see you,” Mrs. Awbrey said, barely able to contain her excitement.

“Yes, come in,” a great voice boomed, inviting us in. I gulped but Derek put a hand on my back and I felt reassured. Amos scowled at Derek’s hand but kept his distance

Mrs. Awbrey opened the door and announced myself to who I guessed was Mr. Awbrey, my dad, because he had the same bright blue eyes.

“Marcy, are you joking? Abducting girls who fit the description of Gracie is not going to bring her back,” Mr. Awbrey said angrily but there was complete sadness in them as he spoke.

“But it is her,” Mrs. Awbrey said smiling. “Go on child.” She gently pushed me toward him and I stood still, afraid of his big shoulders and buff arms.

He swiftly came up to me, looking at me face to face. He was so close to my face, I could notice the stubble of a beard that was growing and the smell his cologne. He walked around me slowly, examining me and it felt weird but I tried to keep still. I saw him coming from the other side of my eye and he walked to face me again, completing his three hundred sixty degree observation.

“It’s really you,” he said barely in a whisper and he squeezed me tightly rather than hugging me. I stood there, smiling, feeling accomplished that I finally found my parents. He let go of me after what seemed to be decades and smiled.

Derek coughed from behind and Mr. Awbrey looked up as if he hadn’t noticed him. “Hello, James,” Derek greeted by name.

“Ah, Derek Hainsworth. We’re you responsible for this?” he beamed at him. I felt nervous and scared for Derek since werewolves and vampires weren’t so fond of each other but Mr. Awbrey, I mean dad looked as if he was a good friend of his.

“A very long story but yes. I think we should talk about this privately without the children,” he said, looking at Amos.

“I’m not a child. We’re in the same grade,” he scoffed.

“I’m immortal,” Derek said patiently. He turned his body towards Amos, giving him full attention. “I was only in your grade so I could watch over Gracie inside the school building.”

“Father, is this true? Is he really the vampire king?” Amos looked up at his dad, hoping he would prove him wrong.

“Yes, son. He is and a very good friend of mine in fact,” Mr. Awbrey smiled. “I expect better manners from you next time. Now go take Gracie to her old room and have the maid order some clothes for her. She will need new ones.”

“Yes, father,” Amos bowed and took my arms.

“Derek,” I called out desperately but he gave me a reassuring smile.

“Go little wolf. It won’t take long,” he said and I nodded, giving him my complete trust.

Once outside the office, Amos turned to me, meeting his blue eyes. “I’m so sorry Gracie for everything. For today. For that day back in the woods,” he said softly, guilt pouring out of his face.

“It’s OK Amos but I don’t remember anything except what Derek told me and I would have probably ran too,” I said. He suddenly hugged me, letting tears flow free from his eyes.

“I’m just so glad you’re back. I thought you were gone forever,” he croaked. He let go of me and smiled with joy. “Want to see your room?”

“Sure,” I smiled excitedly. It seemed like we never missed a day together in our lives. He took me upstairs to a room at the end of the hallway and opened it. I expected it to be full of cobwebs and dust but it was clean and tidy as if it was only yesterday when I had last used the room.

“Mom always cleaned your room even after you…disappeared.” It all seemed vaguely familiar, like waking up from a dream but not quite remembering everything clearly. I walked to my desk and sat on the chair, looking at the decorated picture frames of me and Amos. “How old were we?” I asked, staring at the pictures that decorated my desk but he knew I wasn’t talking about us in the pictures but the night when it all happened.

“You were eight and I was ten,” he said and sat on my bed.

“Hey, get off my-“ I started but stopped abruptly. It just naturally rolled off my mouth. Amos laughed.

“You always hated it whenever anyone went near or on your bed. Brandon and I always bothered you to play with us and sat on your bed until you finally gave in.” Amos came up to me and smiled at the fond memory that seemed to amuse him so much.

“Who’s Brandon?” I asked. His name seemed so familiar but when I tried to think back, I drew up blank.

“He’s…never mind. We can save it for another day since this is all so new to you. I don’t want you to have a heart attack on your first day back,” Amos grinned. “Hey, what’s that thing for?” he said, pointing to the ring on my finger that Derek gave me. “Are you engaged or something?” he said troubled.

“What if I said yes?” I wanted to see what his reaction would be but it was the second mistake I made.

“Don’t tell me you’re getting married to the bloodsucker!” he gasped. “That’s basically illegal.” I didn’t know it was illegal but it was funny how he thought I was getting married to Derek. How weird but how I wished it could be possible. Not that I was planning on it but I wished it was a possibility I could look forward to in the future.

Before I could explain Amos the truth, the door burst open by an angry guy. I recognized him as the guy who I bumped into the hallway and helped me with my books.

“Brandon…” Amos said, hesitant, not sure how to settle the situation.

“You’re getting married to the bloodsucker?!” he yelled at me. His grey eyes seemed to flare up like a storm and I swore I saw some kind of spark in them. His presence crackled through the air, scaring me to death. He came up to me, anger filling his grey orbs.

“What’s your problem?” I asked, backing away from his reach but he grabbed me. I felt a jolt of electricity go through me and I bet he could feel it too.

“Brandon, calm down,” Amos said sternly. He tried to interfere but the Brandon kid was too fueled up in his anger to even bother the advice.

“This is none of your business, Amos,” he said darkly. Amos furrowed his eyebrow, anger beginning to spill from him.

“She’s my sister you idiot. It’s all of my business,” he spat, ripping me from Brandon’s grasp. I hung onto Amos, hiding behind his back. What the hell? “She’s not getting married to anyone Brandon so chill. I was just kidding around, right Gracie?”

“Of course, Derek and I aren’t getting married,” I scoffed although I had a little hope that maybe someday it would all work out. I was so grateful for Amos sticking up for me when he didn’t even know the truth.

“See? There we go. No need to spill out your anger. You’re the one who has a girlfriend,” Amos said bitterly.

“Shut up Awbrey,” Brandon growled.

“Why would you even care about me anyways? We only met once today,” I said coming out from the refuge made from Amos’ back.

“You guys already met today?” Amos asked, surprised by the news and completely ignored my question. “Brandon, you didn’t tell me,” Amos glared at his friend.

“I guess it slipped out of my mind,” he growled lowly.

“Because you were too busy with Alyssa?” Amos spat out harshly.

“That’s none of your fucking business!” Brandon yelled frustrated. He sat on my bed, burying his face in his hands. I wanted to tell him to fuck off my bed but I kept my mouth closed. “Don’t you know how much pain this is causing me?” This time his voice came in a soft whisper and I had an urge to go calm him and soothe him. What a weird feeling.

“Why?” I asked him. I dared to go closer until I sat next to him on my bed. An odd tingling sensation ran through me. Was my foot sleeping again? I kept feeling the weird tingling sensation when people had oxygen was cut off from a body part. “Why are you feeling the pain?” I dared to ask.

He looked at me with those sad grey eyes. It looked like the storm had settled into a small drizzle, keeping the sadness captivated inside. There would be no sun in them tonight.

“Because you’re my mate.”

Question of the day: What the heck will happen next?:O
