Sam's POV

-

"Hey." Rick mumbled, standing in the doorway of my cell.

"Hi." I replied, raising up from my bed.

"How are you feeling?" He asked.

"The same way I did when I thought he died the first time, but much worse." I answered.

"Come on, let's go." He ordered, sticking his hand out.

"Where?" I asked.

"Anywhere but here." He replied.

I took his hand and pulled myself up before releasing it.

-

"Does it get easier?" I asked Rick.

"Yes and no." He answered.

"I understand why you were so out of it when Lori passed." I mumbled.

"I still feel like that." He replied.

"I wish the pain would just go away." I replied.

"It will; not all of it, but eventually it will." He replied.

-

I looked to Rick, hearing voices from downstairs.

He grabbed my wrist and pushed me into the bathroom.

I turned around, a man sitting on the edge of a bathtub.

I jumped back, the man lunging at me.

Reaching for my knife, I grabbed the man from behind and cut his throat.

Blood splattered all over me, but at the moment I really didn't care.

He fell onto the floor with a thud, and Rick ran in.

"Can you take the jump?" Rick whispered, raising the bathroom window.

I looked at the edge of the roof to the porch, wondering what I had to lose anyway.

"Yeah." I answered.

"I'll be down behind you." He replied.

I let go of the edge of the roof, feeling like I was flying for a brief second before I landed on my feet.

It wasn't that big of a fall- maybe eight feet.

I looked up, Rick following suit.

"Run." He ordered.

I ran down the road, Rick right behind me.

"What happened in the bathroom?" He asked, opening the car door.

"He lunged at me and I just did what I had to do." I answered, getting in the passenger side of the car.

-

"Back so soon?" Carol asked as Rick and I walked into the prison.

"Didn't start off too well." I replied, looking down at my bloody shirt.

"Well, we're glad to have you back even if you don't want to be here." She replied, patting my back before walking off.

-

I walked outside, finding Rick cleaning off the blood stain from where Shane lied not even two days ago.

"You don't have to do that." I mumbled, standing behind him.

"Yes I do. It's a reminder that you don't need." He replied, scrubbing the ground with bleach.

"You're gonna go to jail for that. You're tapering with evidence." I mumbled, trying to make the situation light.

"I'm already here." He replied, continuing to scrub the ground.

"If it didn't come up five minutes ago, it
isn't going to come up now." I replied.

"It will." He mumbled, pouring more bleach onto the blood stain.

"Well, I'm taking watch tonight." I replied, holding my favorite book.

"Alone? It gets boring alone." He replied.

"Well, I don't see you stopping any time soon." I replied, walking over to the watch tower.

"Don't you get it? He's totally attracted to you!" Beth exclaimed.

"Who?" I asked.

"Rick!" She replied.

"No he doesn't." I replied.

"Oh, you're in the denial stage." She mumbled, decorating her cell.

I admit, I was jealous of her decorating skills.

"I remember when we were back at the farm and he said your name, and didn't even catch that he meant to say Lori." She smirked.

"It's a simple mistake." I replied.

"Say what you want, but we all see it." She smiled, stringing fairy lights over her bed.

"Who is 'we'?" I inquired.

"All of us. We see how he looks at you, cares for you, and tells you everything." She explained.

"It's called being a best friend, Beth." I replied.

"Oh! And how when we found that you were gone, he was the first one out looking for you, and he did what he promised. He found you." She continued.

"Beth," I mumbled.

"Okay, okay. But when you come telling me how he kissed you and you liked it, I'll be sitting here telling you 'I told you so'." She replied.

"You're crazy." I laughed, leaving her cell.

"Wait! Have you seen Zach?" She asked.

"Who's that?" I inquired.

She blushed, "he came from Woodbury, along with the others. He kissed me today." She replied.

"Oh," I smiled. "Do you want me to find him?" I asked.

"Yeah." She replied, her eyes sparkling.

"Young teenage love." I sighed, before leaving the cell while laughing.

It truly felt good to laugh and smile again, and it helped mask the pain.

"He was out there until after midnight," Carol mumbled, pointing to Rick who was getting breakfast.

"Doing what?" I asked.

"Scrubbing the blood." She replied.

I huffed and rolled my eyes, walking over to him.

"Why'd you do that?" I asked, getting in line behind him.

"What?" He asked.

"You didn't have to do that all night. You didn't have to do it at all." I answered.

He shrugged his shoulders, putting a piece of sausage in his plate.

I followed him to a picnic table and sat down in front of him.

"Why?" I asked again, placing my elbows on the table.

"I already told you. It's a reminder that you don't need." He answered.

I rolled my eyes and looked over to Carl who was talking to his friends from Woodbury.

I hadn't even met any of them since I was so caught up with everything.

I stood up, deciding to go around and meet everyone.

"Sasha! Tyreese!" I exclaimed, wondering how I hadn't noticed them before.

"I've been so caught up with everything I didn't even notice.." I mumbled.

"It's fine. We're sorry about Shane." Tyreese replied.

I nodded, "it's okay."

I continued to meet everyone else before bumping into Beth again.

I ignored her wiggly eyebrows before sitting down beside Carol at a picnic table.

I smiled and cooed at Judith before taking her from Carol's arms.

"She's fussy this morning." Carol replied.

I laughed, standing up and adjusting Judith's cute sun hat.

I walked over to where Rick was still sitting, and found that Hershel had joined him.

"Good morning, sweetie!" Hershel cooed, taking Judith from my arms.

I sat by Hershel, watching as Beth and a boy walked over.

"Daddy, this is Zach." She stated.

I looked to Rick who took Judith from Hershel's arms, and watched as Hershel stuck his hand out.

I smiled, Hershel giving Zach a stern look.

After they awkwardly met, a girl I hadn't met walked up.

"Are you Sam?" She asked.

"Yes." I answered.

"I'm Nicole, and I want you to know I'm really sorry about Shane. We met at Woodbury and he was a really good guy, especially in bed." She stated, a sick smile covering her lips.

"Now don't you think that was out of hand?" Hershel asked, looking up at her.

I locked my jaw before standing up.

"You have my condolences." She continued, patting my shoulder.

I grabbed her hand and twisted her arm around, hearing her scream.

Hershel grabbed my arm, stopping me from hurting her further.

"I don't need your fücking condolences." I sneered, letting go of her hand.

I looked around at everyone, most of them not even noticing what happened.

I sat back down, propping my head up on my hand.

"That was uncalled for." Hershel mumbled, sitting down as well.

"What I did?" I asked.

"No. What she said." He replied.

I nodded, looking to Rick who just looked back at me.

"Who was that?" Beth asked.

I shrugged my shoulders before standing up and walking off.

"Don't pay attention to what she said. She's just trying to kick you down." Maggie stated, following me.

"I'm already there." I replied.

She gave me a sad smile before allowing me to walk away.

I walked into the prison, Sasha following me.

"She's always been like that. I can't wait to see you lay her on the ground." Sasha stated.

"Me either." I mumbled.
