Kelly's pov: it's been a few weeks since till I got something for the apartment even though I was scared at first at what she got in the end I was happy with what she decided to get because it's a basketball game that we all play. And we have been to playing basketball every day we are home. Also here in the next few weeks Stella will be taking her Lieutenant test and I been helping her each day. Right now I am teaching another class at the academy
K= wind up laying across your shoulders so watch ( picks someone up) shoot your arms between the victim's legs you grab their wrist to locks them in place it's as simple as that all right your victims gonna be waiting for you at the top Mercer you want to lead the way
JM= sir yes sir
K= all right let's go move wiegand what do you do if you start to lose balance
W= take a knee and protect your victim
K= once you load it up start back down nice and easy freehand on the rail, slow down Mercer slow down
Right when I was yelling at Mercer to slow dow he didn't and dropped his dummy I finish teaching the class and then head into work . When I get to work I come up with a drill that my class can do when they come to visit later on. When truck 81 got back from their call Matt and Stella offer to help me so they went to find some thermal cameras for me
MC= grabbed the ones off truck and engine found two older units in storage
K= that's plenty I only need six
MC= how's the class
K= couple promising up and comers then there's Jacob Mercer Who gives it his all but scares the hell out of me to see him in the CFD uniform
MC= ( makes a cutting noise) Drop the hammer
K= you think it's still pretty early
MC= this is new job for wannabes me and Darden went through the Academy with a guy name Mazzuca it was one flight after another with him but somehow he made the cut then in his first urine engine he drops his line pills out on his team and put One of them in the hospital we either have the fire fighting gene or you don't
K= ( to Stella) what's your take
S= my take ( shakes his head) well uh I mean girls on fire isn't exactly The Academy but in my experience there's a lot of raw talent out there and with encouragement and a little support you'd be surprised how some people can rise to the occasion ( Kylie walks in) case in point hey Kylie what's up
KY= uh Lieutenant severide Cheif asked if you could join him in his office ( shakes his head yes)
As I'm walking out I asked Stella or Matt to get a winch and heated up in the oven for me so it's ready for the class when they get here. I head to the Chiefs office
CB= ah severide come on in I want you to meet an old friend of mine chief Gary Mercer
CGM= Kelly severide i've heard a lot of about you from Boden and from my son
K= Jacob
CGM= that's
CB= Mercer and I served together on engine 93 save me for more scrapes then I care to remember
CGM= more of the bar brawl variety than anything else
CB= yeah don't you listen to him
CGM= anyways kelly I just wanted to meet the man who is shaping my sons future I appreciate you keeping an eye on
him he's a great kid he's wanted to be a fire fighter his whole life
K= He's a hard worker is always first to volunteer for a drill
CGM= well that's good to hear
K= yeah uh gonna finish setting up
CB= yeah go on get out of here

I leave the Chiefs office and just set up the trail that I have for the recruits since will be here soon. Of course the worst one in my class has to be a firefighters kid and I couldn't tell him that he wasn't a good candidate like right there so I half lied to him which sucks. About 20 minutes later the clash is up in the cheif decide to take them on a tour of the fire house.
CB= if the bed seem uncomfortable I wouldn't worry you won't get much sleep not on shift not with all the snoring in the alarms bells going off all night
JM= I wanna fire fighter sleep with the boots on at night to save time
CB= all right then
K= you guys want anything
ALL= yes sure thanks cheif
CB= you're welcome good luck to you all listen to this man he knows what he's talking about ( walks away)
K= OK one quick drill before you go over there( points to the table in the briefing room) we have some thermal imaging camera somewhere in this fire house we hidden a pipe wrench that's been heated up to a couple hundred degrees first one to find get to sit out next time we hump high rise packs up the stairs right let's go move it
They all go have a camera and start looking Mercer comes by us
S= oh
MC= is that Mercer
K= mm-hmm
MC= not a lot a method to the madness ( to Stella) where did you hide the wrench ( she points to the storage closet) I guess they didn't really say won't get a reading through a solid doors
S= I didn't want to make it look too easy ( 30 seconds later)
JM= I got it I got it( winces in pain)
MC= ugh and that's why we never forget to put our gloves on come on let's go get some water on that hand
S= okay that may not have shown the best instincts on his part
No it didn't this kid is definitely not a fire fighter like his dad said I think I want to kick him out of the Academy but I'm gonna go ask chief what his opinion is on it
CB= hey promising class you've got there
K= it's not too bad you get a look at chief Mercer's boy
CB= yes still got some puppy talk in him doesn't he
K= yeah that's one way of putting it
CB= seems like he's got a lot of heart though
K= yeah he does but he's not a fire fighter
CB= no he's a recruit it's your job to turn him into a fire fighter that's why it's called training
K= I can teach him how to kick in a door or do use a thermal camera I can't teach him fire fighting instincts I can't teach him common sense I know you and cheif the way back so I...
CB= sevride you are the instructor you're the only one qualified to assess Jacob Mercer's performance I'll back you up whatever you decide
K= thanks Cheif
For the rest the shift I think about what the chief said and what I should do. I am not deciding to let him have one more chance in my class hopefully he doesn't mess up again. After shift I'm in the locker room waiting on Stella to get dressed to go home and I decided to tell her what I decided on the Mercer kid
S= so when you are going to give this Mercer kid another chance
K= yeah
S= Boden's not pressuring you is he ( shakes his head no) I didn't think so but then why
K= because I don't know maybe there's fire fighter in there somewhere trying to get out why not make an extra effort to see because I do found him it's going to make trouble for Boden
S= mm yeah that's pretty tough spot you're in but I know you well enough to know that you will find the right way Though ( kiss him and walks away)
I hope I don't wanna got got the second chance on giving him. A couple days later it was time for another class in this class was when they do the smoke box drill
K= once inside the smoke box I want you to conduct a left-handed sweep for victims visibility is going to be close to zero just remember to stay low and keep in contact with your partner all right carr, Martinez you guys ready
C,M= yup
K= Head up ( they do ) go all right wiegland and Burke you guys are next start double checking your SCBA's Mercer how's the hand
JM= okay just glad I can still be useful
W= Lieutenant my air smells weird ( he checks it out )
K= smells like Diesel exhaust ( looks over) Mercer and hat the hell did you do
JM= I don't know
K= these tanks are filled with carbon monoxide ( runs up the stairs to check on the one guy that just came out of the box and passed out) hey hey hey come on hey hey breathe can you breathe ( he gasp for air) take a breathe hey wiegand give me a hand, you guys go get help now, Mercer open up all the doors and windows now get up and help
As wiegand helps him I decide to go into the smoke box to rescue the other guy in their
W= Mercer vent the smoke room
About a minute later I came out with the other recruit and got him breathing and then the paramedics got them check them out. At this point I knew I made a mistake and I have to kick this dude out later on in the day it shift time so I go and tell the cheif what happened.
K= he refilled the air bottles while there was an engine company idling next to the compressor
Diesel exhaust got sucked into the air intakes there was a warning sign right on the machine
" do not use near exhaust fumes" it's been drilled into them
CB= the co alarm didn't get tripped
K= oh it did but Mercer didn't realize what it was so he overrode he's lucky he didn't kill anyone cab= I should have trusted your instincts
K= no this one is on me I was trying to avoid A tough decision
After the cheif talk with me for a few I went about my business so I went to hang out with squad guys at our table when all of sudden I hear my name
CGM= Kelly severide where do you come come off blaming the incident on one of your recruits you're responsible for their well-being it's your job to teach them the safety protocols so if they failed it's because you failed you're not passing the burden this one pal I call Tilburg say goodbye to your trusty sidekick at the Academy your teaching days are done I wanted to be the one to tell you
He walks away I'm in shock that he doesn't realize his son is the one that messed up and thinks I am the one to blame for it. Later on in the shift that you asked me about the accident that just happened with chief Mercer because cruz told him what happen. I told him I would handle it he wanted to handle it but I decided that after shit I will handle it on my own. So I go to his house to talk to him man-to-man
CGM= what the hell you want
K= I wished my dad had my back the way you have Jacobs you want the best for him I can respect that he deserves that. He's a good kid but he's not a fire fighter and if you come at this like a chief instead of a father you see that you wouldn't send German into a burning building with someone you knew who wasn't up to shurf and you're right to blame me for what happened at the Academy but the mistake I made was giving Jacob too many chances I should have cut him sooner I'm sorry it didn't work out but he'll be fine okay he'll land on his feet whenever he ends up because he has a father who supports him ( walks away )
I hope that helps him understand where I was coming from and decides not to have me be fired from my teaching job at the Academy. Later on that night I go to Molly's to meet up with Stella to tell her what happened today
K= hey
S= hi
K= I just got word cheif Mercer backed off my Academy gig is safe
S= that's great
K= well it's a relief that's for sure
S= i'm really proud of the way you handled a super tricky situation
K= yeah well couldn't have done it without you
S= all I said was " you got this Kelly severide"
K= no you gave smart if I was to just like KC you bought your leader ship and experience ( kiss)
I'm glad I have Matt and Stella I just wish I listen to them sooner I just hang out stell the rest the night until she is off and we head home
Authors note: for one love that they gave us some scenes with stellaride and Matt together I need to do more things together. This episode it was nice to see that Kelly was still teaching at the Academy, I love when he was getting advice from Matt he also asked for Stella's advice about what he should do with the Mercer kid. It shows he trust her opinion the most plus it helps that she's getting ready to become a lieutenant. Also lived at the end of the episode Stella through that you got this back at him. This episode had Kylie in it and the other day before I watch his episode it made me think randomly that Casey and Kylie are both Stella and Kelly's kids it's a little joke I have inside my head.
