Yedam whole heartedly hated his new neighbour, or at least tried to. Because the way the new neighbour made him feel was way too foreign to him.
Kanemoto Yoshinori first came to Korea almost one and a half year ago, pursuing his own reasons. He moved as Yedam’s neighbour only months ago. Yet he met Yedam on his very first day. The incident itself wasn’t extraordinary. Yoshi was struggling with lots of boxes on his way to his new apartment and Yedam happened to be there just in time. When he saw an unknown person stumbling upon quite a lot of packages, his kind self immediately rushed to help him. And that’s when he met eyes with one of the most good-looking people he had ever seen, in other words, Yoshinori.
Well, things were really fine between them at first. Yoshi treated him with a smile, invited him for meals and even greeted him here and there. But the problem started when Yoshi’s affection grew a little too much. Yedam felt strange as Yoshi started greeting him on a regular basis, as if he waited for Yedam knowing his schedules for the day somehow. The invitation for dinner and lunch became frequent and Yedam started declining them with time. One day, Yoshi even walked Yedam to school. Even though Yedam protested and pleaded for him not to come, Yoshi seemed stubborn. He actually walked all the way to Yedam’s school only to get back home afterwards. Things like these didn’t irritate Yedam in a bad way, but it just made him stressed that he didn’t dislike the unwanted act of affection by Yoshi. He didn’t want to feel strangely attracted to Yoshi because he was saving himself for someone.
For his soulmate.
Yedam, who was barely months before he could be 18, had a lot of fantasies regarding his soulmate. All of his older friends had found their soulmates and were really happy together, giving Yedam the inspiration to wait for the person that’s meant to be with him after he came of age. Yedam really did value his unknown soulmate, waiting somewhere in the globe for him, just as he was. Was his soulmate younger or older? Was she a girl or was he a boy? Was the person Korean or not? What kind of person would they be? And how would he find them out? Had they met already or not? Honestly, whenever he’s alone, Yedam kept thinking about his soulmate and all the possible circumstances that could happen.
But Yoshi really was a big problem. Yedam didn’t want to feel attracted to Yoshi, not when his soulmate is predetermined, not when his soulmate was waiting desperately for him. He didn’t want to betray his other half, not by falling for his clingy neighbour.
So, he started avoiding Yoshi as much as he could. At first, he stayed really subtle, but soon, his patience grew thin and he started to point out at Yoshi that he indeed was avoiding the taller. Yoshi seemed to grow distant at that, much to Yedam’s liking. Yedam took all the avoiding as far as to not inviting Yoshi on his special 18th birthday even though they lived just few doors apart.
But well, on that very special day, Yedam didn’t go through what he expected. The whole day before his birthday, he anticipated his meeting with his soulmate a lot! He arranged his house, invited as many friends as he could, both older and younger. He had a strong gut feeling that he would meet the special someone of him on his birthday. Therefore, he stayed in the constant feeling of his fluttering heart as he finally reached 18. When the guest started to arrive and shower him with gifts, he waited for a signal, any signal from anyone; be it a mark on his body, a wave of sudden feelings, a strong smell, a sparkle- anything! He greeted every single one of his guests not because he was being polite, but because he really thought someone of them would be meant for him. But that night, he only experienced disappointment.
Not only that day, Yedam suffered for almost three months after that. He met many people during that time, as after being 18, parents allowed their children to explore the world in search of their soulmates. But none of them generated anything new inside him. And the worst thing was, his feelings for Yoshi only seemed to grow, making it hard for him to stay loyal to his unknown soulmate.
Yoshi did sulk a lot, not being invited to the birthday party and even avoided Yedam for days. But seeing the frustration of Yedam, Yoshi decided to forget about his ego. So, he started to pamper Yedam with his countless flirting and boundless affection once again, making Yedam stay in dilemma about his own thoughts and actions.
As if to help Yedam out of the situation where he was stuck, his friends threw a surprise party for him at a bar.
Yedam went to the bar and naturally strolled around to get any sign from anyone, but well, he was given with none. Sighing, he came back to sit on the table, occupied by four of his older friends.
“Yedam ah! Aren't you happy that we invited you?” the one sitting on the right of Yedam, who resembled a panda in a way, going with the name Jihoon, asked.
“I am, really! It's just... I still haven’t found them.” Yedam spoke, in a low tone.
“Aigoo! Don’t worry too much Yedam ah! The one who's supposed to come will come in due time!” Another friend if his, named Jaehyuk assured him. But Yedam wasn’t having their sweet positive nothings. So he kept on sulking.
“Why don’t we drink our sorrows away?” Jihoon cheered, as he understood that talking wouldn’t help Yedam in any way.
On the table of four, the last person, named Junkyu, who stayed quiet till then, sensed something in Yedam. So, even when everyone was drinking, he stayed sober just to talk to Yedam afterwards.
Time marched on and both Jihoon and Jaehyuk stopped drinking. To freshen up, both of them went to use the washroom. Junkyu found the opportunity to talk to Yedam about what was on his mind throughout the whole time they were together.
“Yedam ah, tell me what’s going on.” Junkyu asked.
Yedam sighed. He hesitated to talk at first, but decided that Junkyu would be the best choice to talk to if he really wanted a solution.
“If it’s about finding your soulmate, you can talk to me.” Junkyu said again.
Yedam sighed before opening up,"Hyung, why can't I just find my soulmate already? It's been three months since I'm of age!" Yedam said with frustration.
"Relax! It takes time, Yedam ah! Some people find their partners ages after being an adult!" Junyu reasoned. But Yedam still seemed hesitant about something.
"There's more to it, right? Come on! Tell me everything!" Junkyu said again.
"Okay, the thing is... you know what they say about gut feeling? I get that. I mean I always feel like my soulmate is so close to me... but I just can't find the right person. Tell me, hyung, isn't it frustrating?" Yedam said. Junkyu thought for a bit. If Yedam's guts told him something like that, it must be true.
"But then, have you felt any sign from anyone?" Junkyu asked again. Yedam shook his head a no.
"Hyung, what did you feel when you found out Mashiho hyung?" Yedam asked, hoping the answer would help him.
"Ours was easy. Look, do you see the half of a butterfly mark on my thumb?" Junkyu pointed at the corner of the skin on his thumb. A notable mark of half of a faded blue butterfly was evident there, "It appeared on its own after I tunrned 18. At that time, I didn't understand what it meant and was busy looking for my soulmate. Then after almost six months, my father took me with him for his colleague's son's 18th birthday party and guess what? I saw the birthday boy with the other half of the butterfly on his wrist!" Junkyu beamed.
"Whoa! So the mark was your sign!" Yedam exclaimed, "You had it easy, hyung!" Junkyu smiled. He noticed Jihoon amd Jaehyuk coming back and he was a bit disappointed because his talk with Yedam wasn't over yet.
"Jihoonie hyung," Yedam called, "tell me about your sign when you met Hyunsuk hyung." He spoke.
"Oh, ours was a bit unclear. You know when I met him, I felt strangely attracted to him. And yes, that was my sign!" Jihoon dramatically said, making the other three chuckle.
"That was tough to understand!" Yedam said. Jihoon, who wasn't actually drunk, even though the boy drank a lot, replied, "Well it depends on your personality, so, there's nothing to complain about."
Yedam's eyes widened at that, "How so?" Yedam asked.
"You see, mine wasn't as clear, becuase I myself am a hard to get type person. I made Hyunsuk hyung wait for almost a year even after knowing we're soulmates. I didn't do it for fun, I just took time to know him better. On the other hand," Jihoon pointed at Junkyu, "This guy got into a relationship with Mashiho only after knowing him for a day!"
"That's because we're soulmates! We're meant to be!" Junkyu whined, clearly not liking Jihoon's way of putting things.
"Anyway, my point is, if you're a person with a complex mindset about your soulmate, your hint will be vague." Jihoon clarified, not minding Junkyu.
"Oh! So, Jaehyuk hyung, I guess yours was a pretty strong hint? You found Asahi hyung within a week, right?" Yedam asked. Jaehyuk was a bit tipsy, but he still replied, "I smelt an intoxicating smell when I first saw him. After asking, I realized that he felt the same way and thus we clarified that we are soulmates."
Yedam nodded. Was he a person with a complex mindset or was his soulmate the one playing hard to get?
The little hangout party came to an end and everyone stood up. But Junkyu gestured Yedam to stay back. So, they bid both Jihoon and Jaehyuk goodbye before sitting down on the table once again.
"I thought about something." Junkyu said. Yedam knitted his brows together at that, "What, hyung?"
"You said about your gut feeling... yet you can't find your soulmate- that's impossible. If your guts tell you then you must have already met him!" Junkyu insisted, "it may just be the case that you didn't realize when you received your sign."
"But hyung, I stayed extra keen on my senses, how can I possibly miss the sign?" Yedam yet again replied with a question.
"Are you sure? Think about it, Yedam ah! Isn't there anyone who made you feel attracted?" Junkyu asked again. Yedam went back to thinking. The image of a handsome guy came into his mind.
"If you're indicating Yoshi hyung, I don't think he is-"
"Who's that?" Junkyu asked.
"My new neighbour." Yedam replied.
"He makes you feel attracted?" Junkyu asked.
"A bit maybe? But that's going on for months, even before I was 18.." Yedam replied.
"How old is he? Where did he live before?" Junkyu asked again.
"He's probably 20.. and he's originally from Japan. As he told me, he came to Korea one and a half yerars ago-"
"Bang Yedam! This is it!" Junkyu abruptly said, stopping Yedam midway, "Can't you understand? He came to Korea for you!"
"But I thought I was naturally attracted to him..." Yedam said, running out of excuses.
"Yedam, you were almost 18, he's an adult. It's nothing natural, it's only because two soulmates were in close proximity! God! Just talk to him. Even if you don't, he must know." Junkyu said. Yedam scratched his head. If Yoshi really turned out to be his soulmate, then all he did was being the biggest fool out there.
'I'm doomed!' Yedam thought.
Yedam returned home, with beating heart and knitted brows. His head was filled with thoughts about Yoshi and his feelings for the older one. He really wanted to rush to Yoshi's house and ask him instantly about what Junkyu told him, but it was really late at night and so, Yedam had to wait.
He spent a restless night and woke up early. Freshening up and eating whatever, he went to Yoshi's apartment and rang the bell. It took some time for Yoshi to open the door and Yedam realized why. Because Yoshi must have been sleeping, considering how early Yedam was.
And yes, Yoshi indeed was sleeping. He had his messy bed hair, puffy eyes and a hoarse voice. The side of his cheeks showed a long red curvy mark, coming from the hem of the pillow maybe. Yedam felt a little guilty as he disturbed Yoshi's peaceful sleep but no, not after Yoshi gave him way to walk in.
Because Yoshi didn't have a shirt on.
Yedam internally screamed, watching the milky white skin of Yoshi. But he saved his image by keeping his composure. Yoshi, who understood that he was half naked, immediately excused himself to the washroom.
After a while, Yoshi returned, a black shirt on. He washed his face to let go of the aftereffcts of his disturbed slumber. But he was happy to see Yedam.
"So, what brings Bang Yedam here?" Yoshi said while sitting down.
"Ah... I am here to talk about something." Yedam hesitantly said. He was feeling shy and obviously, stupid.
Yoshi just raised his brows and looked at Yedam expecting to talk. Sighing Yedam opened up. There was absolutely no point hiding the fact from Yoshi.
"Hyung, I- uh.. do you know who your soulmate is?" Yedam asked. Yoshi backed away a little. The question surely took him off guard.
"Why?" Yoshi asked.
"I'm just... curious, hyung." Yedam said.
"Do you?" Yoshi asked, "Yedam ah, do you know who your soulmate is?"
"I have a hunch, but no, I'm not certain yet." Yedam replied.
"And what does your hunch say?" Yoshi raised a brow.
"Ugh hyung! Okay, fine! I think, it might be possible... that you and I are, you know, soulmates!" Yedam glanced down immediately, feeling shy and embarrassed. But he just heard the other chuckling.
"Ahhh Yedammie! Finally!" Yoshi patted Yedam's head and by this, Yedam looked up.
Yoshi looked angelic when he smiled.
"Hyung, you knew?" Yedam asked.
"Of course!" Yoshi exclaimed, "why do you think I pestered you for this long? The moment you helped me on my first day here, I knew I found my cute soulmate."
Yedam felt shy, 'cute?'
"I left Japan because I sonehow knew you are in Korea. And I moved to different cities before finally settling here." Yoshi further explained.
"I see." Yedam kept looking down because he was feeling way too embarrassed in front of Yoshi, knowing how he avoided the taller for no reason at all!
"Are you okay?" Yoshi asked, noticing Yedam's behaviour. Yedam nodded.
"Aye, it's okay! Based on the vague hint, I already knew you would be late to understand. It's fine, really! It isn't about finding each other quickly, rather, bonding with each other in the best way should be our goal." Yoshi sweetly said, patting Yedam's head yet again, only brushing through his soft hair this time.
"But hyung, I'm sorry." Yedam looked up at Yoshi. He really had eyes that portrayed his regrets. So, Yoshi stood up and sat beside Yedam, hugging him from the side.
"Yedammie, don't feel sorry at all! Now that you've found hyung, hyung will always guide and protect you, okay?" Yoshi placed a soft kiss on Yedam's temple. Yedam smiled unconsciously. Yoshi, who always gave him butterflies was making him feel safe and protected in his embrace.
"Thank you, hyung!" Yedam said, looking at Yoshi in the eyes. He still had it hard to believe that the handsome guy was meant for him and him only.
Yoshi took the opportunity to kiss Yedam on the forehead before standing up, "Let me make you a healthy breakfast as a start of our journey together!"
And after he's gone to the kitchen, Yedam observed Yoshi's home. Suddenly, everything felt like his own, everything made sense. The smell which drove him crazy even the previous day, was feeling like home to him at that moment. He quickly went to the kitchen and watched Yoshi work with his back faced towards him.
Why did I even doubt my feelings for him?
As if to console his mind full of regrets, he went behind Yoshi and back hugged him.
And everything felt right from then on.
