CHAPTER 53: 15 YEARS LATER

MITCHELL SLIPPED ON A PAIR OF FORENSIC GLOVES AS SHE AND JJ SEARCHED THE TAFFERT BOY'S ROOM,

Spencer was down the hall in the parent's room and Morgan and Rossi were questioning the parents,

"You okay?" JJ asked, looking through Andy's dresser, "I saw you talking to Spencer on the jet."

Mitchell glanced over at her for a moment before looking back at the bed and looking underneath, "I just want to find this bastard."

"We all do."

"So if Andy was forcibly taken, why didn't he scream or call out?" Spencer asked as he entered the room, "His parents' room is right next door."

"The unsub could have overpowered him, covered his mouth, or had a gun at his head." JJ suggested as she walked over to the window, "Hmm. Look at this." Mitchell sat up and looked over to what the blonde was looking at. "It wasn't locked."

"You think the unsub could've just... snuck right in while Andy was sleeping?" Mitchell asked as Spencer helped her off the ground,

Mitchell went over to the chest at the end of the bed and opened it before Spencer spoke up, "That's interesting."

"What?" The women asked,

"I don't see any sneakers." Mitchell looked over to the shoe rack that sat in the closet. He was right, there was a pair of shoes missing, "I mean, almost every 10-year-old boy has a pair, right?"

"I guess they're somewhere else in the house?" JJ suggested,

Mitchell shook her head, "But look around. Mom seems like a neat freak. They would be here. But since they're not... where are they?"

"What if Andy's wearing them?" Spencer asked,

"That means he would have had time to put his shoes on and leave." JJ said,

"Which means he was most likely coaxed out by someone he knew." Spencer added,

JJ's phone rang and the blonde quickly answered, "Hey, Garcia, perfect timing."

"I have a list of online players that Andy Taffert played video games with." Garcia told them, "It's a short list since his parents strictly controlled his Internet access and only allowed him to play with certain players. 5 school friends, to be exact."

"Is there any chance he met up with one of them last night?" Mitchell asked,

"Well, if he did, they didn't make those plans online. All 5 of them were at school today, and according to P. D. none of them knew about Andy's disappearance." She answered,

"All right. Thanks." JJ sighed before hanging up,

"So if he wasn't lured out by one of his friends, who was it?" Spencer asked,

Soon, they got some news. Garcia informed Hotch that the number that called the Taffert residence the night before, came from Malcolm Taffert's phone. So while Rossi and Morgan questioned Malcolm, the other group separated the wife, Lida.

"You can't be serious. There is absolutely no way Malcolm could have done something like this." Lida cried, "I know my husband."

"What's his relationship like with Andy?" JJ asked her,

"Malcolm dotes on him. It was like that from the minute he was born. I swear, he changed more diapers than I did." Lida insisted,

"Ok. Um, you said there were a total of 4 phone calls from the boy before Andy disappeared." JJ continued, "Were you and Malcolm ever together for any of these calls?"

"No." Lida answered in realisation, "It was always one of us. Alone."

Spencer called the Memphis Field Office and asked for them to send the tape from fifteen years ago. The team wanted Lida to identify if it's the same voice, or a new one. If it was different, that means they're more likely to be dealing with a copycat.

They placed a tape recorder on the table in front of Lida and put the tape inside, "I'm going to play you something from the Clayvin case 15 years ago." Rossi told her and she nodded,

They hit play and watched for Lida's response. As the boy on the recording spoke, her eyebrows furrowed, "I'm gonna get you. I'm gonna get you." The boy recited,

Mitchell shivered and Spencer glanced at her for a moment before returning his eyes back to Lida. It seemed like it was out of a horror movie.

"That's like the call we got." Lida stated after the recording ended,

"You mean it's similar?" Spencer asked,

"No." Lida looked up at them, "It's the exact same call."

"Mitchell was right. It is a recording." Spencer stated,

"This isn't a copycat. We're dealing with the same unsub."
