CHAPTER 15: FORGOTTEN MEMORIES

"SO, HERE'S THE THING. Mitchell Diaz was adopted." Penelope Garcia told her team as they were all gathered around the cell phone,

"We know that already, baby girl." Agent Morgan stated,

"Yes, but the rest is sealed. So yours truly did her own hoodoo voodoo and voilà, popped open the safe. And let me tell you, this girl had gone through a lot before she even hit double digits." She continued,

"What do you mean, Garcia?" Emily Prentiss asked,

"She was born Mitchell Angelica Valencia. Daughter of Miguel and Dominique Valencia. And here's the twist. She had a sister."

"A sister?"

"A twin sister to be exact. Camille Valencia." They heard Garcia typing on her computer, "Here's where it gets dark. According to the reports, their parents died in a house fire when they were five years old. But there wasn't any attempt to keep the girls together." The bubbly blonde continued,

"Why?"

"When Mitchell was in the hospital after the fire, a child psychologist visited her. According to him, Mitchell was terrified of Camille. Suggested that the girls stayed apart. And guess who that psychologist was."

"Robert Faltmen." Agent Prentiss stated,

"Correctomundo, my lovely. And if you keep digging, all the victims were connected to this case. Eventually, the house fire was ruled as a double homicide." Penelope explained, "And guess who started the fire."

"Who?"

"Camille! That's why Mitchell was scared, because Camille had killed their parents."

"That's why fire is part of the signature." Agent Seaver stated, "It's part of how it all started."

"How are the other victims connected Garcia?" Prentiss asked,

"Well, Hal Greensworth was one of the policemen that was on the scene that night of the fire. He rescued the girls from the house. Margaret Fadler? She's the one that placed Mitchell in her foster home." Garcia answered,

"It's all about her." Dr. Reid stated and they all looked at him, "It's all about Mitchell. She didn't commit the murders but she's the reason they happened."

"What happened to Camille after the fire?" Agent Hotch asked Garcia,

"Well, after being analysed by Robert Faltmen, she admitted she started the fire and said it was because her parents were going to send her to a military school for girls. She didn't, and I quote, 'want to be separated from her twin because their souls were one. When separated, their souls and hearts are empty'. Creepy, I agree. So, after, Camille was placed in a juvenile centre. She was then moved to a different facility, racked up quite a record. Lots of assaults, lots of fire starting. Then when she was fifteen, she escaped and she dropped off the grid. Like nothing, blip, blam, gone." Garcia answered,

"Why didn't Mitchell mention this?" Prentiss questioned,

"Apparently she blocked everything out. When visited by a different psychologist a week later, she couldn't answer any of the questions. They think it had something to do with the trauma."

Dr. Reid nodded, "It's connected to PTSD. Memory deficits are a product of neurobiological abnormalities caused by PTSD and/or that pre-existing memory deficits serve as a risk factor for the development of PTSD following trauma exposure." Everyone stared at him with that blank look as he described the how Mitchell's memory could've been compromised, "Brain regions implicated in declarative memory deficits include the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, and imaging and biochemistry studies as they relate to memory dysfunction."

"But this can affect her memory to the point where she's forgot her own family?" Agent Prentiss asked,

"She was young. Her mind was in a fragile stated." Agent Seaver commented,

"We basically ruined her life. She lost all scholarships to Georgetown, her friends, even her father legally removed her from his family." Garcia explained, "And she was innocent this entire time. Two whole years."

"Real question is, how are we gonna tell her about her sister?" Agent Morgan asked and they all glanced at each other.

"Would she even believe us? We did send the innocent girl to jail." The blonde agent stated,

Rossi cleared his throat, "I'll do it."

"Rossi, that's one big bomb to drop on here." Agent Morgan told the older FBI agent,

"She won't want to hear it from anyone else but me." Rossi replied,

SSA Hotch nodded, "Dave, you and Reid will go in and talk to her. Garcia?"

"Yes, sir."

"We need to figure out Camille's latest whereabouts. Look for arson and homicide victims around the area of where Mitchell used to live around the time she was arrested." Hotch finished,

"Alrighty, I'll be back with that info shortly. Garcia, out." The line cut off and Rossi sighed,

"Time to go shake some boots."
