Third Person

Everyone in the world has an ability. Granted, it might take them years to learn what their power is, and it might be completely useless. For example, being able to breathe underwater would be cool, assuming you live near a body of water or are interested in sea life, but if you want to become a lawyer then that doesn't help at all. Of course there are some people who believe that these abilities completely determine who you're supposed to be, called purists. Roman Sanchez, son of Avicen's CEO, is a purist. However his brother, Remus Sanchez, is not.

The Sanchez's make the move to Umbriso City, home to one of the most immaculate schools that focuses on the study and practice of abilities. Remus was a bit apprehensive, while Roman was confident that he would quickly become the most popular student there. Their arrival at the school, which doubled as the high school and middle school, did not go unnoticed. One student in particular had taken notice of the two, Virgil Storm. Most people would have easily glanced over the new kids, minus a few seconds to check them out, but Virgil paused. Roman looked very relaxed, the sleeves of his button-up shirt were hiked up above his elbows, and he only carried his backpack with one arm. Remus on the other hand looked more...pristine. It was almost like how Logan stood, except he didn't have his nose in a book or the 'I'm smarter than you' air to him.

Remus was the one that caught Virgil's attention. He had been tempted to look away after getting a decent look at Roman, which was enough to turn his face red, but then he saw Remus.

One thing to understand about Virgil is his ability. Virgil can essentially assess a person's threat level by looking at them. So peppy Patton sitting with the band kids radiated a one out of ten, simply because of the possibility that he might accidentally crush or strangle the emo with one of his hugs. Virgil's friend Janus had a six hovering above his right shoulder because he might not hurt Virgil, but there were certainly people he could and would beat up. Heck, tall-a$$ Roman only had a three.

Now Remus; calm, sane-looking Remus had a bright white 10 as his ranking.

Virgil couldn't exactly be sure that ten was the highest possible ranking, but he had never seen one higher than it before so it was a reasonable guess. Remy, the social butterfly of their misfit trio, suggested they go meet the new kids before the popular pricks swarm them. He was stopped by Virgil grabbing his arm, shaking his head while he kept his eyes safely on Remus. By now, the other two already knew better than to question his judgement, knowing that there was a reason for it.

So, they made their way over to their usual table towards the back of the cafeteria where Remy could sleep without getting yelled at by the lunch ladies. Once he passed out, Janus turned to Virgil, "So what's the deal with the new kids?"

"You see the one sitting next to Chrissie?" Virgil asks, nodding towards the popular kids table, "He's a rank ten. I've never seen someone rank ten before."

Clearly, Janus knew what he was talking about. He was already well aware of Virgil's tendency to steer clear of most people based on their ranking alone. Janus of course didn't share his power, instead having the ability to intimidate anyone, so he had to trust Virgil's word on this. But seeing someone so...normal be that supposedly dangerous warranted some investigation. Worst case, he finds out that the guy is as threatening as Virge seems to think, pretend he's even more vicious, and then never speak to the boy again. Simple. Then again he doesn't need to give Virgil a heart attack, and directly approaching the popular table is a suicide mission, so he'd have to figure out this new kid later.

Janus didn't end up having any classes with this new kid, whose name he had learned from some gossiping airheads. His guess was that Remus took some more advanced classes to match his preppy persona. But that must be what it was, a persona, why else would the guy be incredibly dangerous according to Virgil?

Their father was pretty important, but all he did was sell tech. Boring, non-world destroying tech. The most intimidating thing that company had ever made were grip gloves meant for rock climbing. It just so happened that the accessory could produce enough force to break a human femur. So he doubted that the Sanchez's lineage warranted the higher ranking, especially since Vee had no problem with the other one.

One thing was certain, this new kid was hiding something and Janus wanted to find out what.

A/N: Little short, but on the plus side this will be the first multi-part story that's not prinxiety. I thought this prompt would be pretty short and easy, but then my mind went and ran with it once I started writing so yeah, it's gonna be like 3 parts. Part of me was convinced that I could turn this into a full, albeit small, book and I already have so much to do with writing and homework so I just- hggnnghh
