Spencer drops me off at my parents' house entrance, kissing me before I go inside. I wave as he gets back inside his car and go inside. The maid greets me at the door, taking my coat as I step further in the door. My sister and Kyle are sitting there patiently for our parents to come into the room. I look into the dining hall as I sit down next to Kyle and his gin and tonic, seeing that they are both on the phone. Small laughs leaving their mouths at different times. I smile awkwardly at both Carla and Kyle, offering them a cupcake. I had the baker neatly wrap the to-go box in fall colors. Both of them declined the offer, and I sank into the couch.

I watch my parents as they continue on the phone. They nod and banter to whoever was on the receiving end, and finally, after a long minute and a half of hearing them talk to someone the way they never talked to me. I turn to Carla, "Do you know who they're talking to?"

"Beats me; they have both been on the phone since we got here," Carla says. My mouth forms an "O," and I check my phone for any notifications that would keep me busy. Sadly, there was nothing there but Spencer's texts that I could look back on from earlier today.

Footsteps boom from across the way, indicating that they were done on the phone calls.

"Sophia Danielle, stop slouching." My mother barks.

"Nice to see you too, mother," I turned to Dad but addressed everyone, "Anyone want a cupcake? They're cinnamon apple."

"You'd be happy to know that I am planning a Halloween party!" My mother chimes in, ignoring my words.
