It's my birthday today and I'm having a barbeque house party.

The party started an hour ago.

I invited Naira even though we have not made up yet.

I couldn't just leave her out. Yes, we are in a fight but if I don't invite her I'm sure she'd have a panic attack.

She'd had enough of those from the week she had a fever.

I haven't been talking to her, only the usual hi.

"Mason!" Mackenzie kisses me on the cheek.

"Hi." I say, plastering a smile.

She's getting really annoying. I was going to break up with her last week but decided not to, her hamster died.

The weather is ok for a barbeque, it's 16˚c, quite warm for late Autumn.

"Hey, Mason." Josh walks up, Naira right behind him.

"Hi. Hello, Naira." I try not to look too surprised that she actually came.

"Hello, Mason. Happy birthday." She squeaks.

She semi-hides behind Josh's back.

"Naira wants to talk to you," He pauses. "In private." He nods at Mackenzie.

She hugs me before going to her friends.

Josh goes as well.

"How have you been." I say, walking up the stairs.

"Fine, and you." She answers, following me.

"Good."

We go into mum's study.

Naira shuts the door as I sit on the only chair, she stands awkwardly by the door.

"What is it." I say, trying to look stern.

"I...I..." there are tears in her eyes and my face softens.

"What is it?" I say softly.

She starts crying with her hands on her face.

"I...I'm sorry." She kneels on the floor.

I walk over and squat next to her.

"For what."

"You know what." She cries more.

I get some tissues from the desk and pass them to her.

Since she'd apologised, so do I.

"I'm sorry too, I shouldn't have gotten angry so easily."

She hugs me.

I stoke her hair to calm her down.

She smells nice, of... marshmallows?

"Why do you smell of marshmallows?" I ask, breaking the hug.

She smiles and takes something out of her bag.

"Surprise." She chuckles softly and puts a bag of marshmallows in my palm.

"Do you want to-"

"-roast them."

We laugh and get up.

For the next 2 hours it's like the old times.

We laugh and chat and joke.

I walk into the kitchen to get more burger buns when I see something, something I'm very sure I wasn't meant to see.

Mackenzie doesn't see me so I run away from the kitchen.
