01
Jaime Carter

I sighed after cleaning the whole house – my new, simple, and gorgeous abode. Wiping the sweat from my forehead, I grabbed a bottle of water and drank it straight. Exhausted, I just wanted to rest all day, but hunger nagged at me.

Grabbing my phone, I dialed Lhea. After two rings, she answered with excitement in her voice.

"Hey!"

"Hi, Lhea. How are you doing?" I asked.

"I'm fine, and I have good news for you. Guess what? I'm flying to San Francisco."

"You what?"

"Yeah, yeah. That's why you have to prepare. This is going to be fun!"

Lhea is my best friend, the only person who knows me deeply. She helped me during my difficult time, and I promised to be by her side no matter what. We're like sisters, having both come from Italy. I arrived here to escape from someone two months ago, hiding and living with a sense of foreboding each day.

"Are you still there, Jaime?" Lhea's voice brought me back to the conversation.

"Yeah. Sorry."

"Is everything okay?"

'No. I'm scared.'

"Yeah. No need to worry. I'll call you later. See you soon, Lhea."

"Okay. Bye."

"Bye."

After ending the call, I made my way downstairs. I really needed to eat.

I looked at the poster intently, then at the building in front of me. I needed a job to live – perhaps the best way to overcome my fear and worry. Changing my name had helped me evade him, and now I could do whatever I wanted. I was free in this country, ready to start a new life and forget everything that happened in Italy.

Entering the restaurant, there weren't many customers, maybe because the lunch break was over. The gothic style was gorgeous, with large windows, thin and tall walls, pointed arches, ribbed vaulting, and flying buttresses.

By the looks of it, this was one of the finest restaurants here.

Approaching the counter, a red-haired woman greeted me with a strong aura.

"What can I do for you, Ma'am?" she asked with a smile.

I returned the smile. "Uhm, I'm looking for a job. I saw the poster outside."

"Oh! Wait here; I'll just call the manager." Then she left.

As I waited, I looked around the restaurant. There were only a few people, likely wealthy ones.

Just as I was about to step forward, the door opened. My eyes are fixated on the new customer.

First, I noticed his emerald eyes, then his perfect face with a chiseled body. All in all, perfection.

But my gaze averted when he looked at me. My heart started to palpitate, feeling my knees quiver. This man was dangerous; I could sense it.

Where was the woman? Why was she taking so long?

I peeked at the man, but they were now talking. I felt his aura, telling me how perilous he was.

Yet, my heart melted when he smiled at the man he was with. I placed my hand on my chest, where my heart was. I looked at the floor and closed my eyes.

'What's happening to me? Why is my heart beating so fast?'

I looked again at the man, and to my horror, he was staring back at me.

Suddenly, I hid and looked away. The red-haired woman came back.

"Please follow me."

I followed her until we reached the manager's office. I greeted the young woman. She seemed familiar.

"I'm Chelsae Morisaki." She extended her hand for a handshake.

I don't know why, but this woman seemed somewhat familiar.

"Jaime Johnson." I shook her hand.

"You can start tomorrow, Jaime. Be here at 9 sharp."

"How about my credentials?"

"No need for that."

That's odd. I mean, who on earth hires someone without credentials? Whatever.

"Thank you."

I smiled as I made my way outside the restaurant. This seemed like my lucky day.

"Hello, princess."
