So, you know how Nagito's always creepily happy and always talking about hope? Yeah, he's lying to himself and others. He knows bad things are going to happen because of his luck so he pretends he doesn't care about other people's life. He does. He cares so much. He doesn't want anything bad to happen so he blocks everyone out. He just wants hope. AKA Ultimate Good. He just wants something good in his life for once. He just wants friends, family, love. He just wants a normal life where he didn't have to lie to himself to make it through the day.
Okay, but, this is actually canon. It's confirmed in Nagito versus the World Breaker that he just wants a simple life with friends. And even after he lives in that world he's still lying to himself until Hajime reaches his hand out and helps him up.
