• The preparation •

"Not a lot. After the talk we had with the class I felt a lot better" Diana looked back over to the boys. Anne sighed and continued on the decorations . Gilbert walked over to the girls and smiled at Anne. She didn't notice because she was too busy making the decorations. Gilbert faked a cough and Anne jumped more than Diana did.

"Oh my word Gil , you nearly scared me half to death!" Anne laughed with Gilbert. He sat down next to her and pointed to the thing she was making.

"What's that?" He seemed intrigued. It had a lot of flowers , Anne shrugged her shoulders and looked into Gilbert's eyes.

"Honestly I don't know. I was making it up. Maybe we could put it at the edge of the stage! I can make a ton of them , it'll be beautiful" Anne smiled with excitement and continued on with her crafting. Gilbert looked up and saw Matthew Cuthbert and Marilla Cuthbert coming their way. He went over to greet them and led them to where Anne and Diana were sitting.

"Matthew? Marilla? What are you two doing here?" Anne stood up  and hugged the two siblings. Marilla passed her a basket of snacks for the students and Anne thanked her. "You should sit" Gilbert said .

"Oh no. We wouldn't want to intrude . We were just passing by. I made some extra plum puffs and thought you kids would love some" Marilla seemed extra happy today which was an odd thing for Anne. Anne hair simply nodded her head and sat back down next to Diana.

It was getting late and they were almost finished with setting up for the next week. They had already taken the Queens entrance exams and Gilbert took a different exam. Miss Stacy was still waiting for the results to get to her.

"Come on Anne. I'll walk you home" Gilbert grinned seeing that Anne was almost asleep. Gilbert grabbed both of her hands and pulled her up lightly so she wouldn't wake up. He then put his hands on the back of her neck and behind her knees to carry her in bridal style. He walked all the way to green gables . Even though his arms were feeling weak about half way through he didn't drop her. Once he arrived his knocked on the door and waited for someone to come.

"My my . Is anything the matter with Anne?" Marilla opened the door and saw that she was fast asleep in Gilbert's arm. Gilbert shook his head and smiled.

"Well come in. You must be very tired" Marilla welcomed Gilbert inside and allowed him to bring Anne into her bedroom . He placed her down on her bed and pulled the blankets over her . Out of breath from carrying her for so long he smiled and kissed her forehead .

"Good night Anne" Gilbert shut the door ever so quiet and hurried downstairs. He saw Matthew sitting on his rocking chair and walked closer.

"Gilbert. Hello there" Matthew greeted Gilbert with a small smile as he didn't expect him to be here. Matthew wanted to ask a question but was afraid Gilbert wouldn't want to answer it.

"I um" Matthew begun it but Gilbert interrupted .

"Mr Cuthbert. I know what you're going to ask. If I've done it yet . My answer is no. I just haven't found the right time. But if that wasn't your question I can answer it" Gilbert smiled at Matthew who was relieved. He knew that Anne was 17 and was quite capable to mend for herself  but he still saw her as the little Anne at the train station.

"Nope that was my question. But if you don't mind me asking. When will you?" Matthew Asked Gilbert.

"I don't know as of this moment . I do know that it will be soon. I just don't know when." Gilbert was sitting on a chair next to Matthew and Matthew had so many more questions but only one was the one he really wanted to ask.
"Have you picked out the ring yet? I know Anne doesn't care about the diamonds and jewels." Matthew Asked with a little smile again. Gilbert nodded his head .

"Indeed I do. It's my mothers ring. It belonged to her and I think Anne should have it. If you don't mind" Gilbert said still well aware that this was Anne father.

"Oh I don't mind. Anne will love it" Matthew smiled at Gilbert. Gilbert got up and thanked Matthew for letting him rest after carrying Anne for so long.

"Well goodbye Mr. Cuthbert" Gilbert smiled and waved goodbye .

"You can call me Matthew" Matthew raised his voice a tad . That way Gilbert would hear him.

"Well . Goodbye Matthew. Have a good night." Gilbert stepped out the door and started his way back home.

"So when are you going to propose?" Moody Asked Gilbert. They knew that Matthew gave him his blessing so it could happen anytime.

"I don't know yet. But soon" Gilbert smiled at the thought for being married to anne. Since he met her he knew she was the girl for him. Her temper , her hair , her freckles, just everything!

"Gilbert!" Someone said behind the group of boys.
