Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Studio: Ghibli
Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Family
Synopsis:
Satsuke and her younger sister, Mei, settled in an old country house while waiting for their mother to recover. As the sisters explore their new home, they encounter and befriend playful spirits in their house and the nearby forest, most notably the massive creature known as Totoro.Review:
At first, I find this film boring. I only see playful sisters playing around in their neighborhood that is somehow close to the realm of spirits and that only children will find this appealing. However, the film actually has a dark hidden meaning to it about Totoro being a death god and giving the children another moment to spend time in the realm of the living. The director is a genius for adding the element of death and afterlife in a cutesy film while still making it child-friendly to watch. Thumbs up for Miyazaki.Kudos to the visuals too, as always.
