Matty sat down quickly and took Bill's hand.

"Sorry, hun. I tried. But you know how Joyce is."

Bill squeezed Matty's hand and smiled at her, afraid to actually speak.

"And as fer da rest of youse, not a single word 'til Ise is finished."

Joyce sipped on her rum.

"Does Ise makes meself clear?"

A deathly silence fell over the room. Most simply nodded their compliance.

Joyce took a deep breath.

"Ise don't like mainlanders. Never 'ave, probably never will. Never met one dat Ise felt Ise cud trust and da truth bes known, when I met dis mainlander, Bill, Ise didn't like 'e either.

Ise jest thot 'e were another one like all da other ones."

Bill sank in his chair, as low as he could without falling off and crawling under the table.

Joyce stood up and leaned on her chair.

"But ...

of all da mainlanders, Ise met, he bes da closest Ise ever seen to a Bayman dat was not born and raised in da Bay. Not dat 'e bes perfect, but 'e has been nothin' less den a gentleman to all da women of da Bay and he has treated da men wit respect and dignity. Not once did 'e ever looks down 'is nose at anyone in da Bay. Not once.

'e even supports Tucker's store, even tho wes all knows dat 'enry dere charges 'e more den 'e charges da rest of us. 'enry bes a bit of a crook from time to time."

Joyce pointed a finger at Henry.

"Not a word dere 'enry. Youse knows Ise rite.  Bill dere even buys 'enry's new 41 pack smokes dat everyone knows bes massively overpriced.

And 'e never once complained. Not once."

Joyce turned to Matty.

"'e even hooked up wit one of our own and tho 'es probably pissed off more den one young man in da Bay, whose 'ad eyes fer Matty all der lives, he still does 'es best to fit in."
