Smoke Alarm

More annoying than anything,
They're meant to help,
Meant to save you.

The loud screeching,
Sounding like it's dying,
Dying along with the house.

Flames licking the walls,
Flickering in the dark night,
Accompanied by billowing smoke.

People fleeing what was theirs,
Losing what they worked so hard for,
Despair setting in.

Still the shrieks of the alarm,
Echoing through a busy street,
Filled with curious onlookers.

So what does it do,
But annoy you,
And haunt you?

What does it do,
But save your life,
That you no longer want.

Maybe it will alert you in time,
The fire can be put out,
But maybe it will just kill you.

Destroy your mind,
Screaming again and again,
But maybe it'll save you.

I just write this on a whim. It's a little rough, but I hope you like it.
