18| Whatever happened to best friends?

"SO YOU'RE STILL A DUCK?" Connie asked as they sat upstairs near the snack bar. A bantam game played off on the nearest rink by the window and Nova winced as she watched a guy get smashed into the boards hard.

"mhm..." She mumbled before popping a fry into her mouth.

Guy smiled widely, "good to have you back, November. I would have hated to see you in that hawk gear"

Averman snorted and tried to grab a fry but Nova swatted his hand away. "now that i think about it," Averman grumbled as he looked down at the fries, "maybe you shouldn't have come back"

Nova rolled he eyes playfully as Connie swatted Averman's shoulder with a laugh.

"just get your own fries, Averman!" Guy chuckled, "you know Nova doesn't share her fries... or muffins.."

Averman looked at him pushed his glasses up, "funny you assume i have the money"

"they're like $1.50 Averman" Connie said

Averman shrugged and smiled slightly as he looked away from his friends, "whatever... I- Oh Hey Charlie!"

Suddenly, The group of friends snapped their attention towards Charlie who stormed at them with anger in his eyes.

"what the heck guys!" Charlie said as he pulled up a chair roughly and sat down, "where were you?!"

"look char-"

"We had to forfeit you know!"

Nova stayed silent as Charlie rolled his eyes at them all. All she could do was look around at the awkward moment.

"he called us losers, Charlie! He doesn't even believe in us.." Guy mumbled. Charlie looked at him and looked away in disappointment

"First we find out Nova has to go to the hawks, then Banks has to join our team, and now this... Come on guys. What ever happened to best friends?"

Nova sighed and kicked Charlie under the table to get his attention, "first of all Conway, I'm a duck again- not a hawk. And secondly, we're still your best friends, Charlie. Nothing's changed..."

Charlie crossed his arms and grumbled something under his hearth before standing up from the table abruptly.

"where are you going now?" Connie asked as she looked up at him

"promised Fulton i'd help him with homework" Charlie said quickly and sternly before leaving.

The four friends were all quite stunned as they watched him stomp off. Connie and Nova exchange worrisome glances before Nova allowed her head to fall and hit the table.

Averman scoffed as he took this moment to eat a fry, "honestly, it feels like we're in some intense movie where anytime a problem is solved, another comes in"

Nova sighed and looked up at him, resting her chin on the table, "this movie better not have a sequel then."

      AFTER THE PAST SERIES of events Nova has unfortunately been apart of these recent days, She was just glad that she was able to clear her head.

Sadly, after everything that happened on Wednesday, she hasn't been able to speak to any of her friends- only Connie, which was basically just a five minute phone call about how Connie's dog accidentally ate one of the socks Nova left at her house. As for Charlie, Nova wasn't sure if he was still mad at her or even mad at her to begin with. Overall, everything was just a huge mess.

The teacher blabbed on and on about the circumference of a circle while Nova wrote her name in cursive repeatedly on her notebook. However, she couldn't help but feel a gaze on her.

Nova looked up and furrowed her eyebrows. She turned around and spotted Adam and his big blue eyes staring at her. Except, instead of the usual twinkle in his eyes whenever they interacted, they were plain and empty. He looked as if he wouldn't have a care if a deadly animal came in here and ate them all.

Nova sighed and turned her attention back to the front of the class. Her eyes wandered over to the clock that hung above the black board, she smiled contently. it was finally Friday and the weekend would be soon coming in the span of 30 seconds.

Nova quietly and slowly closed her notebook. As usual, like a domino effect, the girl next to her saw and shut her binder before moving around to get her stuff together. This caused the next person to do the same, then the next, and eventually, everyone had been moving to get their stuff together before the bell rang.

Nova sighed as the class hadn't gotten the hint that the teacher was still teaching and she was sure they would be quite mad at the distractions. Fortunately, The bell rang before the class was able to get into trouble.

Nova quickly walked out of the classroom and managed to get to her locker before the crowd got more dense.

She shoved her notebook and novel into her backpack before quickly shutting it and walking out the school.

She managed to catch a glimpse of Adam as she walked out. He had just shut his locker and he hoisted his backpack up his shoulder before walking out the doors. For a moment, Nova thought he would talk to her since he was making his way over but she was wrong as he stopped in his tracks and turned the other direction upon hearing Larson call his name.

Nova couldn't help but frown as the only person who would actually make an effort to talk to her at the school wouldn't talk to her anymore. It was like everything just changed in the span of five days; but then somehow got fixed before everything went bonkers again- like an unfixable puzzle. However, there was one detail that Nova could just feel in her gut that, despite all the change that has happened, told her everything was just getting started. Like an on switch for everything to just turn and change. She didn't bother with it though. It was just some stupid theory of hers that probably developed after she read a book late at night. it was nothing she thought.

Nova got caught in her thoughts and she hadn't even noticed that she made it home. She looked up from the ground where her trance was once fixated on her feet.

beep beep!

she heard from a distance. She squinted her eyes and looked out at the road as she saw a car driving at a normal speed with kids sticking their heads out the window.

As the car approached, she got a better view of what was happening and soon enough, she could clearly hear the familiar sound of a duck. Nova smiled as the car pulled up in front of her. Despite all her friends who were seated at the back with their windows rolled down, the passenger seat window opened to reveal a familiar face.

"well what are you waiting for? an invite?" They said with a smile, "come on, we have a practice to attend to!"
