'What? Why?'
'I may or may not be in a little bit of danger'
'Can we help?'
'How? I have dangerous people banging at my door and I can't let you know who I am.'
He seemed to disappear for a moment, leaving you to listen to the pounding increase. By this point, you feared for your door. It was a nice shade of red and it would have been a shame to have it kicked in.
You closed your cat website.
It was getting harder and harder to understand why you were being targeted, why he wouldn't leave you alone. You didn't know who your contacts were, but you didn't want to get them involved in gangs if you could help it. You were already far too twisted into that mess and nobody else needed to be involved.
'RM is here. He says that we can give you protection if you need it.'
'I'm pretty sure these are gangs that I'm dealing with.'
'Nothing we haven't dealt with before.'
You were getting nervous. You heard a small click of your mic turning on from the laptop, a sound you figured was from JK who likely had become a little nervous for your sake. If you disappeared, they would be losing an asset. The cities greatest hacker was working for them. Not many could say the same.
The banging turned into stomping as you heard your front door slam into the wall behind it. You were trapped.
'I'm listening through your mic.'
'I didn't say you could do that,' you typed quickly but quietly.
"She has to be here somewhere." A man growled from downstairs, his voice echoing around. You were, honestly, terrified. You didn't deal with this sort of thing, you were an idiot on the internet who liked to cause inconveniences. Not deal with gangs.
You knew that life would catch up with you and you hated that it was all you ever knew, you hated that it ran in your blood. And you hated that you didn't take more time to learn about it while you could. You knew the tiny details, but you didn't know the important things. You knew they were gangs, but you didn't know which. You knew he had an interest in you, but you didn't know why.
'Are they looking for you?' another message appeared.
'Yes. I can try to get out, but that leaves me homeless and in danger.'
They didn't respond again and you heard steps get louder as they went up a floor in your house. You could hear them ransack your bedroom that was directly beneath you, you could hear your heart pound.
'Come stay with us.'
You didn't have many options. If it was the police who were ransacking your house, you would have had no problem revealing yourself to deal with the consequences. But you knew it wasn't and you knew whoever this was were dangerous.
You were thankful you at least had nothing in this house other than the laptop on your legs to indicate that you were Miseriae.
'Fine.'
'We will meet you at the drop point in an hour. Do you need help escaping?'
'Nope,' you glanced around. You were thankful that you were well trained in climbing from the windows. You weren't the most well-behaved kid, and more often than not, you would climb out of the windows to get into the garden. Sure, it was for the sake of stargazing, a gentle pass time, but, climbing from windows wasn't the best way to go about it.
It had been an hour.
And, sitting in the dark park behind a tree, you realised that you were quite frankly, fucked.
