You sat, silent in the terror of your home.
It was once a cosy place, a place where you lived comfortably, learning to engineer from a woman kind enough to love you when you had no home. It wasn't full of wealth, not like one of your homes, but it was full of sweet memories torn from you too soon.
And now you sat in it, knowing that there was a car sat outside waiting and watching.
Of course, you were working just like usual. Though, not on anything dangerous.
You were making yet another fake website, one detailing a cat uprising. It was just for fun, just to pass time while you waited out the trap you were caught in. You couldn't leave, but you needed to go to your second home to pick up devices from rotting drawers. Unfortunately, moving from your home was risky when there was somebody watching your every move.
You had sent your contacts all of the files they needed to get onto your laptop weeks ago, and to your surprise, they managed to get on it within an hour of receiving everything. It seemed that JK, the person who was in charge of hacking, was pretty decent at it. Not the best, they left traces, a location of their whereabouts. But, you weren't going to touch it. You had respect.
And as you sat, fiddling on your laptop, waiting as patiently as you could for the car to leave at four in the morning, you found that JK was trying to get in contact with you again. Though, through a much safer way. Sort of.
Sticky notes.
It was always strange, seeing a note pop up out of nowhere with a new message. But you were used to it by this point, you two felt like friends. Friends enough to make a game out of trying to hack each other's systems. Usually, you would find him trying to break through your firewalls without the files you sent him to do it easily, and as a way to help him learn, you fought his attacks. It was fun.
'Are you making a website about a cat uprising?'
You laughed. It was always simple conversations with JK, you still had no idea who they were, their role in everything or what their gender even was, but, they seemed nice. More often than not, you would end up having odd conversations about memes you both saw. Though they once changed your background and you didn't appreciate that.
'What else would I be doing?'
You pushed yourself up, moving towards the window of your attic, the only place you felt mildly safe because it was so difficult to reach. The ladder was old, rotted and pretty much out of commission. Thankfully, while you were young, you always had fun climbing the bookshelves to get into your comfortable hiding space in the attic.
It was dusty, forgotten, but your blanket pile was still there and still as comfortable as you remembered it being.
You glanced out the window, noticing that a second car had appeared.
And so, you retreated back to your laptop in the hopes that you could pretend that you saw nothing.
'I finished the last job you guys needed' you typed, hoping to distract yourself for a while. 'Details are in the folder called 'nothing illegal'. Let me know if there's anything else you need.'
'So quick. How do you get info so fast?' they asked, unknowing of the panic you were sitting in.
'Magic and internet.'
You heard a pounding at your door.
You ignored it.
'Remember when I said I might disappear?' you kept typing, slowing your pace so the keyboard didn't sound quite as loud. 'Now might be that time.'
