"I got it," you answered.
"Well-"
"Hey, what are you doing!?"
JK was cut short, his words stopped by another voice that sounded slightly different in tone, it was a little deeper, but, it was familiar.
"Oh, uh, RM-I- uh-"
"Is that the- you're talking to Missy? JK, I swear to God-"
You stopped, hearing the shifting sounds as two people on the other side of the phone argued, their voices quietened for only a moment.
"Why are you calling them?"
"I had questions about hacking."
"This is dangerous, you don't know them. This phone is strictly for business."
"I hate to interrupt," you spoke up, "but now that I know that JK is definitely with you, I don't mind answering questions."
"You don't?" RM's voice asked within seconds. "I don't want you to be interrupted while you're working."
"I'm not. In fact, I'm picking the money up. My work has been slow recently with a situation that's going on."
"Then-" he paused and then his voice returned, a little louder. "You're on speaker. JK, I'm listening, so don't say anything that will give us away, okay?"
"Okay."
You glanced around, still unable to get the money. You worried that you would be stuck in the park for hours, and with the man around, you didn't want to risk that. Things had been getting dangerous, and you wanted to keep the number of times you were seen by him to a minimum. He at least didn't know where your base was, and you needed to stay out of his sight to keep it that way.
"How long have you been working with us?" JK asked, their voice a little easier to differentiate when you had theirs and RM's side by side. "I know you've done a lot to help, but, how long?"
"Hm," you scrunched your nose in thought. You had been hacking for years, you weren't always good, but you at least had good training. "I think maybe a year?"
"Sounds right," RM agreed. "You said you were picking the money up. Have you got it? Is it the right amount?"
"Oh, I'm not sure, I'm just waiting for people to..." your voice trailed away.
You went to look and see if people were around. And it was almost clear. Almost.
Except, he was there. You could see his familiar figure, tall, strong, dark-haired and stony eyed. He screamed 'violence'. You could barely believe your parents tried to set you up with him.
"Ah, heck-"
"What?" RM asked, hearing the sigh slip as you stood and started walking away. "Is there something wrong?"
"The money," you started, glancing back to see him trail behind you, he was slow and far, but he was always in sight. "I can't get it. I doubt I'll be able to, so you should send somebody to get it back. Oh, God, where do I go-?"
You glanced around, realising that there was nowhere you could possibly go. There were no crowds around, none big enough to get lost in. So, you were left to risk trailing around the city, looping around buildings in the hopes of confusing him and losing him.
"Are you running away from something?"
"Uh-" you hesitated. "It's complicated."
Yet, you realised that as things became riskier in your life, you needed to think of a backup plan.
"Actually," you started again, "JK, you're trying to learn to hack, right?"
"Right."
"Then, I'm going to send you something later. It'll be safe, but, I need you to trust me."
There was a pause in the conversation. The entire phonecall was chaotic and unusual.
"What is it?" RM asked, wanting to be sure that they were safe.
"My laptop... kinda. I'm assuming, if things get any worse, it'll become harder to get in contact. So, I'm sending you a way to breakthrough my laptop's firewalls... if you can't see any activity on there at all, assume I'm gone." You lowered your voice, hoping to keep the man who followed you from hearing you. "I mean, I might not go missing and if not, this could just be some good practice for JK, I can teach you hacking stuff. But also, if I do go missing, I'm trusting you with my work."
"Hold on," RM intervened. "Why would you go missing? Your work is important to our own, I need to know if something is going on. At this point, you're part of this team, even if we have no clue who you are."
You shook your head.
You knew nothing about them, they knew nothing about you. But you knew that without them, you would have starved to death, you would never be able to afford all your energy drinks without them. And there was an appreciation built because of the necessity of both sides of the work you did for them. You needed their money, they needed your abilities.
"Don't worry about it- uh, also, if you do get onto my laptop, don't judge my background."
There were few things that you really loved, but your strange wallpaper of a pug and crow mixed together to create a bird with the head of a pug, a crug, was one of those things that you did love.
"When should we get through onto your system?"
"Immediately. Don't worry, I'll send you a little guide or something too. I really need you to trust me on this." you said, your voice lowering as you looked back to see that he was gone. But, that didn't mean you were safe. "Please, just, trust me."
