Chapter 14 (Part 1) : An unwanted Job

Start from the beginning

‘’Yeah I am, he can be so reckless at times.’’

‘’Don’t worry, he will realize his mistake.’’

‘’I hope so.’’ She said giving me a warm smile.

‘’Um, so I wanted to ask you something.’’ She nodded, and I continued.

‘’In two days time, it’s my birthday so_’’

‘’Ooh that’s great!’’ She exclaimed giving me a pat on the head.

‘’Mom’s having this party and she wants you to come.’’

‘’How sweet of you, of course I’ll come. No wait- I have a grand idea!’’ I wasn’t sure what kind of grand she meant but I just gave her a confused look,

‘’Why not we arrange a party here?’’ Ok that wasn’t what I expected.

‘’Here? You mean in the café.’’

‘’Of course, I will talk to your mom. She would love the idea.’’

‘’I am not sure if Derrick_’’

‘’Who cares about that,’’ she said giving me a reassuring look, ‘’ I’ll take care of it.’’ Her smile was so sincere that I couldn’t help but nod,

‘’Alright, if you insist.’’

‘’How many people are coming?’’ Carmen asked me, when we got out from Algebra,

I shrugged, ‘’Not much.’’

‘’Don’t tell me you didn’t invite anyone except me.’’ I gave her a sideway glance,

‘’Don’t flatter yourself much, Daniel, Dale, your brother, Dylan, mom, a few relatives, Julie, her sister, Mrs. Cattermole_’’

‘’I didn’t ask you to make me a whole guest list.’’ She interrupted me,

‘’You did ask who I was inviting.’’

‘’Yeah and even this is such a short list.’’ It was my birthday, not prom. And I didn’t get it why people – even if they happen to be my best friends – were making a fuss out of it. Wasn’t I the one who was supposed to act all obsessed with the guest list?

‘’it’s not like I have a list of my old boy friends whom I should call.’’

‘’Don’t go all sarcastic with me.’’ She had no idea what I wanted to do with her…if only she knew who sick I was getting from hearing her name day and night from Daniel. It wasn’t like I could actually stop him from coming into my house whenever he wants. And mom wasn’t going to change our location just because of that.

It was just a matter of time, until I was going to have Carmen in my dreams as well.

‘’I am not being sarcastic, I am just trying to remind you that I don’t have many people that I need to invite.’’

‘’Well I am already planning on calling the whole school on my birthday.’’ I couldn’t help but snort,

‘’The whole school doesn’t hate you.’’

‘’Things are getting better aren’t they?’’ She asked with concern.

‘’Yeah unless getting new notes shoved in your locker everyday is called better.’’ Carmen put a reassuring hand on my shoulder,

‘’Don’t worry, even if they hate you I still trust you.’’ At least she didn’t say ‘it was your own fault’ like Daniel. In times like this she was more understanding than him. Sometimes when people say things like these in bad situations, people think it’s just a formality but sometimes these words are like a proof that there is someone who still have your back. It was the same for me.
