Chapter 43: The Psycho Is Innocent

Three days later

"THANK YOU FOR coming in Ariel. I know that these past few days have been pretty rough considering what you had to go through. Firstly, I want to say that I'm glad that you're beginning to recover and secondly, I'd like to get started immediately if that is okay with you." Detective Parish exclaimed as he gathered the files on the metal table. "Yes, it's okay." Ariel said as she braced her crutches against the wall.

"As requested, we received all the evidence that you have gathered over these past few months along with the digital recording of Parker Lynn's full confession. However, I'd first like to discuss Evelyn Mariel," he flipped open one of the files and motioned to a photocopy of Evelyn's old school notes. "Our handwriting analyst determined that the threatening notes that both you and Larson Styles had been receiving over time were undoubtedly written by Evelyn Mariel."

Ariel scoffed inwardly, of course it was. "Whilst reviewing miss Mariel's files, we found out that a few years ago she was admitted to the Preston Saints mental institution. We attempted to get a hold of her records there, but we were declined because it is classified information between the patient, doctor and the institution. Regardless, one visit to miss Mariel's parents and we no longer needed a warrant to find that information for ourselves." Detective Parish crossed one hand over the other and peered into Ariel's eyes intently.

"Apparently a few years ago, Evelyn had feelings for this girl named Katey at her old middle school. It started out as a simple crush but gradually this crush turned into an obsession. Katey had a similar story to yours. Every time a certain boy took interest in Katey, miss Mariel would threaten her. It started out with notes in her locker and when Katey didn't take it serious, it progressed to threatening notes to her house claiming that she would hurt Katey's family.

Over time this behaviour got worse until it all came ahead one day after school. Apparently, Evelyn followed Katey home and confronted her in an alleyway a few blocks down from her home. There, the two had an altercation where Evelyn confessed her love that Katey did not reciprocate. Katey allegedly declined miss Mariel's advances which Evelyn did not take lightly too. One thing led to another and miss Mariel snapped: she hit Katey over the head with a rock and ran.

Katey was admitted to a hospital for over a week. When she woke up she reported Evelyn and seeing as she was only a child at the time of course prison was not an option. So her parents were given the chance to send her to a youth detention centre, boarding school or a mental institution. They then sent her to Preston where it was evaluated that Evelyn suffers from something called Obsessive love disorder."

Ariel fought to keep her lips pursed in a thin line. She desperately wanted to burst into a fit of laughter but instead settled on digging her nails into the material of her shirt to keep her excitement from showing. "So it makes sense that she took this same route with you considering her track record. Apart from that we re-examined the case with Kendra Styles and found out that the very same week she was run over, miss Mariel's father had scheduled an auto painting job for his car.

The description of the car that was given had matched the vehicle that Mr. Mariel drove, however he had gotten the paint job before the hit and run was officially reported. Officers thought they were in search of a grey Honda, not a red. This minor detail derailed the entire investigation and no one had gotten reprimanded for it. After assessing the case thoroughly we have concluded that it was indeed Evelyn Mariel who ran over Kendra Styles."
