They spun
haunting nightmares
from their gaping mouths
in hopes the children,
trembling,
might learn from the cold.
Over time,
stories for lesson
became glorious tales
littered with
magic of happenstance,
clouding reason until
unrealistic expectations
swallowed happiness.
