Chapter Twelve (III)

Start from the beginning

"Elements?" Gaius asked eyebrows raised. Merlin nodded closing the book grabbing another.

"Which book should I be looking at?" Merlin asked his eyes flickering towards Gaius.

"They all have some basic elements in them all. You should know that the elements hold a big factor in almost all scientific experiments." Gaius explained. He often felt he expect too much intelligence from the boy.

Merlin looked up from the books confused. None of it was adding up. "How is science or the elements going to help me defeat the Afanc and save Gwen?" Merlin asked running a hand through his hair.

Gaius sat down next to the trouble lad doing his best to help him. "Let see...Afanc is made up of earth and water."

"Like a giant mud monster," Merlin mumbled.

Gaius gave him a sharp look before continuing. "That's two of the four base elements."

"What about the other two?" Merlin asked turning to Gaius for clear obvious answers.

Gaius thought about it. If it was made up of two element s and according to Merlin the elements were the secret to beating the creature then that meant... "Well, perhaps they will destroy it. You want fire. Wind and fire. How did you find this out?"

Merlin felt as.his hands were quick to sweat. "Erm... I just knew, you know? One of my powers." This was a pretty good lie saying neither really knew the extent of his power.

"What else do your powers tell you?"

He thought about it before remembering another thing the dragon mentioned. "That I am only one side of a coin. The brighter side, obviously."

Gaius tool ad his eyes. Merlin could quiet cocky at times. "And who's the other side?" Coins had to sides and hopefully the other side would humble Merlin quickly.

This caused his face to fall into a scowl. "I think that might be Arthur."

Before they could talk more about it a worried Morgana smashed into the room. "They're bringing forward the execution. We have to prove Gwen's innocence."

Merlin's head snapped towards her. His chest tightened and he jumped out of his chair racing over to Morgana who also seemed to be freaking out a ton.

Merlin never really thought about how close the two were and how much this would affect Morgana.

"We're trying." Gaius reminded his arms folded.

A tear fell down the angels face. "Please, just tell me what I can do to help." She cared so much for not her manservant but her best friend.

Another smart plan formed inside Merlin's head. "We need Arthur."

If Kilgharrah mentioned a coin with both Merlin and Arthur that meant this mission would need both to succeed.

Although it made sense to Merlin it didn't make as much sense to Morgana. "Arthur?"

Merlin nodded his head heading over to the table full of books pulling on out. "There's a monster, an Afanc, in the water supply. That's what's causing the plague."

Morgana looked at the best her eyes skimming the page. "Well, we must tell Uther."

"The Afanc's a creature forged by magic. Telling Uther wouldn't save Gwen. He'd just blame her for conjuring it." Gaius explained destroying their hope of saving Gwen quickly.

Frown Morgana asked a crucial question. "So what are we to do?"

Merlin's gaze lingered on the page. He was going to pit both his and Arthur's life in danger. He didn't want to die and he wasn't sure how he felt about Arthur's death.
