"The sprite one?" Zarina asked, her eyebrows knitted in concentration, eyes closed.
"Yes. When ever you are ready."
Zarina let out a long breath before bringing her palms together. "Assuetus faunus maleficum spiritum meum et vocavi te!" She chanted, pushing her hands out and away on the last word.
A bright blue light began flickering around the circle, a light laughter filling the room.
"Nice work Za-Za, now concentrate. You summoned him, he has to listen to you. Try asking him to do something." Nora gently prompted, her attention focused on keeping up the protective magical barrier that surrounded them intact.
"Fae I ask of you, tell me-what be the fate of my mother?" Zarina asked, pain clear in her voice.
"Careful love. Those kind of questions don't always have the answer you want to hear." John cautioned, stress eating at his stomach.
The sprite giggled darkly, its light changing from a pale blue to a dark green.
"Nora," John began, but before he could finish the sprite turned to a dark, blood red hue.
"Zarina, Zarina poor dear. A child who murdered her mother, and was thrown in with a drunken father. A child born of a loveless relationship, a bastard and the whore." It whispered into Zarina's ear, moving closer to her until it hovered just in front of her nose.
"I am not scared of you, answer me, I command you." Zarina spoke, her voice trembling slightly.
"Zarina shut it down," Nora warned her arms shaking as the protective magic barrier began to flicker.
"You know exactly where, you're the one who sent her there." The sprite growled, growing in size.
"Reditus, de quo est spiritus tenebris," Zarina shouted attempting to send the sprite back to its realm.
"Oh you can't get rid of me that easily deary," It growled before plunging into Zarina's chest.
"Nora, lower the barrier!" John screamed terror clutching at his throat as he dove into the circle. A loud alarm began to sound in the background as the level of magic in the room reached extreme levels.
Zarina was slumped over, still. A dark red glow emanating from her chest.
"We need to send this bastard back to where he came from," John spat, his eyes rolling back as he began the incantation to cast the sprite out.
"Oh Jonny boy, you are terrible. Letting your daughter follow in your footsteps will only lead to ruin." A dark voice spoke from Zarina's body, her head tipping up to revel carnation red glowing eyes.
John and Nora kept chanting, trying to block out the sprite's threats until a loud wail broke from Zarina's throat. As it died, the red sprite came flying out of her mouth before disappearing into the air.
Danger having passed, John raced to his daughter's side, scooping her up into his lap. "Come on love, open your eyes. Come on sweetie." John begged trying to fight back tears as the alarm in the background stopped and the doors to the lab opened.
"Is everyone alright?" Ray asked, panting his face loosing color at the sight he was greeted with.
"Come on love, please open your eyes," John pleaded rocking Zarina's small frame back and forth as he clutched her to his chest.
"Daddy?" A tiny voice spoke as the rest of the team flooded into the room, ready to fight whatever had attacked their family.
"I got you love, it's alright...you're okay, he's gone." John whispered, blinking back tears as wiped away sweat from Zarina's brow. "I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have pushed you so hard..."
"It's okay," Zarina muttered her hand reaching up to grab his, a weak smile making it's way to her face.
"Why don't we leave them," Nora suggested, leading the rest of the Legends of out the Lab, filling them in on the events that had just occurred.
Slowly, John's heart rate began to slow, but he still clutched Zarina to his chest, afraid of letting go.
"Dad, I'm okay, but let's call it quits for today, eh?" Zarina asked, pushing her way off and trying get to her feet. Before she could take a step, she swayed and nearly collapsed, but John caught her, sweeping her into a bridal carry. "Dad!"
"Shh, I've got you. Just take it easy, let's get you rested up. You can tell me off later." John stated carrying Zarina back to her room. Since she had finished growing, and there was space, the legends had cleared out one of the other bedrooms (which was being used for storage) so she could have her own room.
Gently, John laid Zarina down into her bed. Having fallen asleep in his arms on the walk back, she snuggled down into the sheets, a low sigh escaping her lips. "Sleep tight my love," John muttered, pulling the comforter up before giving her a light kiss on her forehead. From the doorway he looked back, watching her small chest rise and fall with her breath as she slept. Content that she was no longer in danger, John let a small smile escape, before stepping back into the hallway-letting the door close behind him.
Hope you enjoyed! I loved writing this. I feel like John, despite his prickly outward appearance, would make a great dad because he loves so deeply, and cares so much about everyone even if he tries not to show it. I'm probably gonna write a follow chapter for this, and maybe make it into its own story if people enjoy it enough. Feel free to leave your thoughts below (positive feedback is always welcome!).
