What if everyone starts taking that silly rumor about me sleeping with the teacher seriously? How am I going to stop the stares, the offers of a "fun time", and the nasty comments from the girls, especially from my ex-best friend, Sadie?
All of the anxiety built up from the situation made me nauseous and want to stick two fingers down my throat to rid of the feeling.
I stared longingly at the door as if it were the answer to my prayers.
"Leave, Valerie." Mr. Reynold's voice grumbled, making me jump.
"Excuse me, sir?" I squeaked.
"Just go," He replied tiredly, running a hand down his somber face.
I stood in my spot for a few more seconds before reluctantly walking out of the classroom.
As soon as I closed the classroom door behind me, I sprinted as fast as I could. My heart pumped each time I pushed one foot in front of the other. At first, I didn't realize why I was running until I passed up the bathroom.
I need to find Nathan.
Lightheaded, I ran past the corner at the end of the hallway, only to find Nathan walking towards the entrance of the school.
"Nate, wait for me please!" I called out, hoping any school administrators strolling throughout the school didn't hear me.
He stopped, his large hand on the wooden double-door, veins protruding beneath his skin.
"Shouldn't you be in class?" He asked in a tight voice.
"Yes, but, Mr. Reynolds wanted me to come after you..." I trailed off, wondering why I was lying to him.
Why am I starting to like him? This isn't fair. All he's been is nice to me and has treated me with nothing but respect. I need to stop this. All of this. My heart beating fast every time I make eye contact with him. The way my cheeks blush when I see him wandering through my thoughts like it was a park on a sunny day...
"Figures." He scoffed, and my eyebrows scrunched together in confusion until I felt my arm being gently tugged and the cold breeze from outside nipping at my cheeks and the tip of my nose.
"Where are we going?" I asked nervously, attempting to ignore the sparks pulsing throughout my hand where Nathan's touched it.
He didn't answer, and while I was walking behind him, I stared at his back profile, noticing the way his shoulders would tense up, then slightly relax. The cool wind blew his dark blonde hair into disarray, and my hand itched to feel the soft, thickness of it. Suddenly, the smell of his cologne hit my nostrils, causing me to deeply inhale the cool, woodsy scent.
As we neared the gates to the entrance of the school parking lot, I couldn't help but barely tighten my grip around his. My heart began pumping harder than before when I felt his index finger began to lightly trace over my knuckle.
He doesn't mean anything by it, I mentally told myself but felt nervous and my hand became clammy when I realized that my heart simply didn't care.
As we neared a silver car, Nathan released my hand only to open the passenger door for me.
"We're not going anywhere with you standing there." He nodded to the inside of his car, his metallic grey eyes glimmering with amusement.
"R-right." I stuttered, then smiled up at him.
"What?" He asked, a ghost of a grin pulling at his full, pink lips.
"I can be so awkward sometimes..." I replied under my breath, playing with the ends of my platinum blonde hair, but looked strangely like a grey-ish white underneath the cloudy sky.
"I mean, I'd be awkward too if some guy pulled me out of school and practically dragged me to his car..." He trailed off with a snort.
My entire face felt hot from embarrassment and I shook my head so my hair could fall in front of my face.
"You never answered my question, though." I reminded him, looking down at the concrete ground.
At first, he didn't answer, until I felt a pair of warm hands push past my long hair and tilted my head up, causing the long strands to fall from my face.
His silvery-grey eyes seemed so bright, and as we stared at each other, his pupils noticeably gotten larger, dilated.
"I'm sorry if this makes you feel more awkward, but I prefer maintaining eye contact when having a conversation. Specifically, with you." He said, his warm breath fanning over my chapped lips.
"B-but, w-well," I paused to clear my throat, "You still never answered my question." I said, grinning embarrassingly up at him.
"I haven't answered for a reason." He replied, then released my face from his hold.
I nodded and made my way into his car. Before he got in as well, he gently closed my door for me, making me blush even more.
Calm down, Valerie... I told myself, but it didn't work.
I felt jittery, my body shaking with delight as he got into the car.
"Are you cold?" He asked, eyeing my body with concern as he buckled his seatbelt.
"N-no, I'm fine," I replied, my voice shakier than ever.
He nodded, then put his key into the ignition, the car thrumming to life. He turned on the radio, not before flipping on the heater.
Although I felt incredibly nervous and swallowed the lump in my throat, I didn't question where he was taking us.
"To finally answer your question, I wanted to take us to a place I go to when I need time alone." He explained as we pulled out of the school parking lot.
I tried not to think about the fact that he was taking me somewhere sacred to him and instead leaned my head against the window and drifted off to a small, peaceful sleep.
