The ride to the place where all of my hopes and dreams have been torn apart and crushed seemed all too long.

Maybe he's taking me somewhere else, I thought optimistically. But when Alex, the driver, turned down the all-too-familiar back road, I froze up.

"Why are we going to Jacob's, again?" Marcus asked from the seat next to me, slowly dozing off.

He fell asleep a few times, but when Alex and Trenton began to get agitated from his snoring, I would flick his nose to wake him up.

Marcus Freeman, the old star linebacker. Although he was an alcoholic and somewhat of a drug addict, he tried to help me, and I couldn't thank him more. So, waking him up was my only way to show my gratitude for the time being.

"So Valerie can pay me back." Trenton gritted out from the passenger seat, scratching the sides of his neck every once in a while.

"Alright, damn! Don't get your panties in a twist, now." Marcus tsked.

Gazing out the window, I watched the dark trees pass by like a slideshow. Sometime long ago, I would dream about climbing those trees and one day join Tarzan to protect the forest. I grinned at the memory, reminiscing in the old innocence I once had.

"Psst," Marcus whispered.

Ignoring him, I continued to look outside.

Then, he began to flick me on the leg.

Still, I ignored him

Suddenly, he flicked me so hard that I couldn't help but yelp out a small "Ow!".

"Shut up," Trenton growled from the passenger seat, tapping his index finger impatiently on the window.

Frowning at Marcus, I put my index finger up to my lips, silently telling him to be quiet. He looked at me for a moment, then mouthed, "I'm sorry."

My heart beat in longing. No one has ever told me that before.

Surprised, I mouthed, " Why?"

He just smiled, and whispered, "For everything."

Frowning at his words, I resumed back to looking out the window.

Was he apologizing about getting me in trouble? But, he technically didn't do anything wrong. If anything, he was trying to help me.

Then, a thought bubbled into my head. A thought that I so desperately hoped wasn't true.

Does he know what I do to get the money?

Looking over at Marcus, he already dozed back off to sleep. His dark hair fell onto his face and a small snore escaped his lips.

He looked so peaceful until the truck suddenly came to a halt.

Slamming into the back of my brother's seat, Marcus woke up with a jolt and looked around for a moment, confused, until he noticed the building outside. Then, he shook his head and went back to sleep.

I guess he doesn't know, I thought and released a small sigh of relief.

At least nothing would get out of hand tonight.
