"Well, well, well. If it isn't my infamous students showing up late yet again." Mr. Reynolds glared harshly at Nathan and me.

While my face was as red as a tomato from the embarrassment, Nathan wore an impassive look, no sign of being affected by our English teacher.

"Oh, so you're not the only who seems to know that we're late? Geez, I'm very impressed, Reynolds," Nathan said sarcastically, rolling his eyes in the process.

A small swarm of chuckles came from the classroom.

"That's Mister to you, De Luca,"  He gritted his teeth, a vein popping out on his forehead.

"Then I deserve to be called Mr. De Luca, as well, don't you think?" Nathan questioned,  cocking a single brow.

I bit my lip to keep from smiling, but I couldn't hide the small giggle that almost blew my cover.

"What's so funny, Miss Chilton?" Mr. Reynolds asked, cocking his brow at me.

"Nothing sir, just had a cough, is all," I said, holding onto my English binder tighter than necessary.

"Mhm. Anyways, I was explaining to the class that we were going to have a relaxing week of watching a movie. But, since you two are late- once again, might I add - you both have the privilege of staying in the library working on a three-page essay about why you're tardy." Mr. Reynolds smirked savagely, crossing his arms.

"Wow, a three-page essay. I gotta give it to you, Reynolds, because I definitely wouldn't have seen that one coming." Nathan snorted, and I widened my eyes at him.

"Keep smarting off to me, young man. Or you'll cost you and your partner some detention time." He sneered, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose when it began to slide off.

My heart froze when Mr. Reynolds mentioned detention.

Oh my god, how am I going to make it home on time to make dinner for Trenton and I tonight?, I mentally panicked, trying to come up with a plan.

"Threatening me with detention isn't exactly a good negotiation tactic," Nathan deadpanned.

Before I could stop myself, I grabbed his arm. Nathan turned around and looked at me, surprised. I was rather stunned with myself, too.

"It might not be a big deal to you, but it is for me. So, please, don't say anything else." I asked, begging him to understand with my eyes.

He looked utterly confused, a deep frown resting on his face. Before he could open his mouth, Mr. Reynolds began to speak.

"I'm sorry Miss Chilton, but with his attitude, I'm afraid that you will have to suffer the consequences on his behalf." He said, sending me a pitying look.

"It's fine," I vaguely grinned, but it wasn't fine.

How was I supposed to make Trenton's sandwich the way he liked it when I won't even be there? How am I going to contact him and let him know that I'll be late coming home because I got stuck in detention because some smartypants didn't want to shut his mouth?

"I can go to detention alone, there's no reason to punish her," Nathan told Mr. Reynolds, startling me.

"Why are you sticking up for her, Nathan? Haven't you heard what kind of girl she is?" The same girl from yesterday snarled.
