Kunar, Afghanistan

"I feel like you are driving me to a court martial," my Dad mumbles as he stares at the two soldiers in front of us. "This is crazy. What did I do?"

Dad and I are in a Humvee, surrounded by three soldiers who were assigned to escort us to our plain back to Malibu. There is a silver radio between the two front seats, blasting AC/DC songs as Dad drinks his scotch and I sketch in my book.

He takes a sip of his drink and I roll my eyes. It's not even noon and my dad started drinking again. His alcohol addiction will kill him one day but he won't listen to me.

He is still looking at us as no one respond to his comment and then adds, "I feel like you are going to pull over and snuff me."

Still no response. If the Humvee wouldn't make loud noise, then we could definitely hear chirping crickets now. I squint my eyes as the sun shines directly at my face, dooming myself for not bringing my sunglasses.

My dad looks at the skinny guy on my left and nods towards him,"Hey Forrest."

"We can talk, Sir," he explains

"Oh, I see. So it's personal?" I ask as I raise my eyebrow, which results into me blinking as my eyes tear up because of the sun.

The woman, who sits in front of us explains,"No, you both just intimidate them."

"A blinking girl is very intimidating," Dad mumbles as he watches me struggling. The soldiers chuckle and I nudge my Dad with my elbow, shaking my head.

He shrugs and continues talking,"Also I am surprised. You are a woman. I honestly... I couldn't have called that." He looks around. "I mean, I'd apologize but isn't that what we're going for here?"

I roll my eyes again.

"I thought of you as a soldier first," he states with a monotone voice.

"I'm an airman."

"You have actually, excellent bone structure, there. I'm kind of having a hard time not looking at you now," he confesses seriously but with a flirtatious undertone. "Is that weird?"
