                                                                             ~Zoes P.O.V~

My lungs burn. They burn so much. They hurt so badly I can feel myself weakening. I swallow my saliva as I dash around one of the corridoors in the maze, jumping as I come across a large pile of vines.

I am a Searcher. Someone who searches for a way out, every day we come out here and search. For anything that could help us. Anything that could give away a secret or a hint on how to get out of this shucking mess.

I am not the first person to be delivered. There have been many before me-tons. I just picked up on everything, the wording, the jobs, the life.

Whir. Click. Whirrr.

I scale the vines as a Griever slides by and pull my knife out of my belt. It slowly looks around, making a whirring, robotic noise. As it turns away I jump down, ignoring the flaring pain that shoots up my ankle. I slice through it's rubber-like skin and plunge into the screw. The heart of the griever. I breathe heavily.

As I lean against the wall it moves. I am serious, it actually moves.

"What-AGHHH!" I scream.

I fall into a dark pit, with nothing but the thought that I could die.

                                                                       _____

When I finally come around I am in darkness, so much of it. My legs are cold and rubbed raw by what feels like a metal floor. As I thrash about I seem to swing. There are walls, very small too.

In the distance I can hear shouting.

I squint as the sunlight bores into my eyes, grumbling under my breath. When my eyes finally adjust I stand up straight. Am I...In a greenie box? This has to be some joke. Whatever slinthead arranged this is gonna be in trouble.

The walls open and I fold my arms across my chest, ready to yell at the shank that put me in here.

"It's a girl!" Someone bellows.

"Of course it's a bloody girl, what do you think I am?" I shout back.

There is silence for a few minutes and then a muddy hand reaches down, out-stretched.

"I'm quite fine getting out by myself thank you." I snap.

I jump up quickly, fingers gripping the metal and I swing myself over.

"What the-" I begin.

Boys. Lots and lots of them-they are everywhere and they are all staring right at me.

"I'm Alby." A dark kid says. "I'm the leader around here. Can you remember your name?"

"Too right I can, what do you think I am? A flipping greanbean? My name is Zoe you shank." I snarl.

All the boys seem to gasp.

"Y-you speak like us?"

"How do you-"

"SILENCE!" Alby roars. "Where exactly did you come from Zoe, if you can remember that."

"The Zone. The maze." I say quite simply, folding my arms across my body.

I yawn, pulling a hand through my tough, red curls.

"Are you shucking crazy?" A voice rings.

It seems to have a bit of an accent, one that I can not recognise. I whip my head around to stare at him. His golden mop of hair hangs into his dark eyes as he stares right back, as if challenging me.
