Chapter 2

Abbey pulled into the drive and got out the car, she unlocked the door and looked at the clock it was two. Greg usually got back around five, so she had to get the house sorted before he got back. She could feel that there was already an argument brewing between them.

She got a bin bag and started to clear the empty beer bottles from floor and table. She dumped the bag in the outside bin, and vacuumed all the rooms in the house.

She ran back downstairs and into the kitchen to put a chicken in the oven. She took a quick look round; it looked fine she thought, he couldn't possibly find anything wrong with it, although she needed to open some windows, becuase the smell of weed was still strong.

She went back to the kitchen and cut some vegetables up putting them in saucepans when her phone started to ring.

"Hi mom, yeah I'm fine just getting dinner ready. Greg's bringing his newest addition to the gym round for dinner and the dragons coming as well"

Her mom burst out laughing at her when she said dragon, that was Abbeys un-affectionate name for her mother-in-law.

"Listen mom I’ve got to go, I'm busy I'll ring you later love you." Abbey threw the phone down on the side and set the table.

She was just placing the knives and forks down when the door knocked, it made her jump, and she dropped half of them on the floor.

"Oh shit." She muttered.

She scrambled around to pick them up. She ran to the door, and put the chain on the door opening it. Greg insisted she did this he said it was because he was rich,  and you could never tell who would come knocking, he was so paranoid.

She groaned when she saw it was the dragon, she closed the door and took the chain off.

"Come in Mari," she tried to sound pleased to see her.

Marianne shot her a dirty look," Greg told me to come round, he said I should help with the dinner. He does not want you to embarrass him like last time when you served up burnt food.”

Abbey recalled the day that had happened, Greg had come back from work and he had been tense about something. He dragged her upstairs and they had painful sex, he took all his stress out on her. She could remember the pain of the bruises she got that afternoon like it had happened yesterday.

They were upstairs for hours and the dinner was burnt. He went mental at her and she got a slap for it, but she had become good at hiding her bruises now and he had become good about the places he hit her. He never touched her face anymore.

"It’s fine really. I've got it under control," she snapped at her, she hated the way she spoke to her as if she was simple.

Marianne pushed past her and went into the kitchen inspecting the vegetables she had cut up. She was muttering something about Abbey not having a clue, she hated the way she belittled her all the time.

She was worse than Greg he could put an act on in public, he had the pretty wife on his arm, and he put on a good show of how they were in love, but not his mother she didn't care who was around. For her the more people she could tell how stupid her daughter-in-law was the better.

His mother was quite the successful business woman, she had sixteen salons dotted around the country. She constantly liked to rub it in Abbey's face that when she was her age she was a blossoming young business woman, and Abbey hadn't achieved anything in her life.

She said that expecting to be a kept woman was not the way things should work. Marianne's husband died when he was fifty, he had committed suicide. The poor man had probably been driven mad being married to her, it must have been like a prison sentence, and Abbey was certain he would have got less for murdering the old boot.

Marianne circled the room like a hawk, rubbing her finger over things and inspecting it for dust, and it infuriated Abbey. She never said anything to her because Marianne would go running to Greg and turn the tears on saying how much she missed her husband Stanley. She would say she just needed some company, and Greg would be furious with Abbey for hurting his beloved mother's feelings.

She was a sneaky cold hearted witch, she even looked like a witch with her long grey hair and glasses that balanced on her wonky nose.

Abbey knew better than to ignore her mother-in-law so she made some polite but pointless conversation, "So how are things going at work?"

Marianne stood in front of the sofa picking the cushions up and plumping them, “It’s fine," she snapped.

She gave her answer sharply, how was Abbey meant to have a conversation with that woman when she gave her nothing back. The tension in the air was thick. Abbey was worried about Greg coming home, and she didn't want to see Sam again, the way he had looked at her made her stomach do somersaults.

In a way, she did wish they would hurry up; Marianne was driving her mad she was inspecting every nook and cranny for dirt and dust; she was surprised she hadn't said anything about the smell of weed.

Abbey served the dinner up, just as Greg and Sam came through the door laughing and joking about something. Sam stopped talking when he saw Abbey and smiled at her. He had the most beautiful smile, and he looked so sexy with the dimples in his cheeks when he smiled.

Abbey couldn't believe what she was thinking and was mentally kicking herself, she was married after all, but a part of her couldn't help wondering if Sam had a girlfriend. Greg came into the kitchen, and gave Abbey a kiss on the cheek, it was just another show of togetherness.

"Hey hon, have you had a nice day" he cooed, Abbey felt nauseous she knew he would change as soon as Sam and Marianne left.

Abbey kissed him back, "Yeah babe have you?"

He pinched her ass and whispered in her ear, to Sam and Marianne it would have looked like he was being the doting husband. After a long day at work he was giving his wife who he had missed a kiss, but Abbey knew better . This man she called her husband wasn't whispering sweet nothings into her ear despite the smile.

"Don't think I didn't notice the look on your face when you saw Sam earlier, you'll be paying for that little stunt later," he hissed. He kissed her on the cheek again and walked back into the living room.
