Leo's hands are cold to touch. The unfamiliar sensation leads sparks where his finger trail on my hands. I put my head down on my desk, letting myself absorb the feeling.

I hear Mr. Sanderson's words, but fail to comprehend them. I don't know how long Leo holds my hand but it feels like hours.

Leo moves my hand back to my lap before he lets go. I look up at him. He gives me a small smile before writing on a new sheet of paper and passing me the note.

Thanks, Kala, it reads.

You feel better now? I slip the note onto the corner of my desk.

He eyes follows my handwriting across the paper. He looks up at me and nods.

I pull the paper back towards me. Do you want to talk about it?

Later, he mouths.

I nod.

"Kala, is there something you would like to share with the class?" Mr. Sanderson asks, looking annoyed.

My face flushed. "No, thank you."

As if my prayers were answered, the bell rang at that precise moment. Leo flinched at the sound and I began collecting my stuff in my bag.
