So let's start with the basics.

Akumas are butterflies from the Moth Miraculous. Hawkmoth is abusing his powers. The butterflies are purple when they are directing a target.

First up, what does akuma mean?

'Akuma' is Japanese for 'demon'. If Hawkmoth wasn't abusing his Miraculous, then I'm guessing the name may change.

Here is one theory I have mentioned before:

There are so many butterflies that Hawkmoth has. So why does he have so many when he only akumatises one at a time? It could be because he is planning an army, not for Asybug to purify them.

But it that is so, listen to this!

Then, why, in the Origins Episode, the book depicts four butterflies in action at the same time????

And with all different powers, too, I think.

Does that mean that Hawkmoth can akumatise more than one person at a time?

If so, then why hasn't he done so?

My guess is that if my theory it correct, then Nooroo is limiting his powers or if you abuse Miraculouses, some powers of it cannot be used.

I mentioned in Good vs Evil: The Rules that Hawkmoth was revealed to Nathalie, but Ladybug and Chat are not allowed to. (Though they will later in Season 2, I think!)

Anyway, read Good vs Evil: The Rules for more info on that.

So, what do moths represent?

'Namely, the moth is a nocturnal creature, whereas the butterfly is diurnal

So, think of Dumbledore and Grindleward: the same mould, but one light and one dark. That's the butterfly and the moth.

That could mean the Hawkmoth's butterflies are supposed to be used for good, but there is evil at the same time? Or just cunning, shy, or sly.

Faith
Nooroo is faithful to Hawkmoth.

Attract
Akumas are attracted to a certain emotion.

Subtlety
How easy it is to abuse it? Has subtle energies against evil? No idea.

Intuition
Uh... he follows his intuition on who to akumatise and what power to give them? I don't know.

Concealment
The Akuma is concealed in an object.

Vulnerability
Even Hawkmoth has suffered pain. *SPOILER* Remember Mamma Agreste? Even the moth has a soft spot.

Determination
Hawkmoth's determination to get those Miraculouses.

Oh and one more, thing.

In Stoneheart, when Ladybug didn't capture the akuma, the akuma went to Hawkmoth's cane. Akumas are faithful to Hawkmoth.

Ever wondered what the pattern on akumas meant?

Are the Miraculouses closer to heavenly beings than we think? Are the superheroes he links between gods, angels and devils and humans and animals?
