Right after I had the twins, and after my parents left, I told John that I wanted to see the babies. The only time I had seen them was when Brandi held them up to get their umbilical cords cut by John. So, John and I called in a nurse to ask if we could see them. We knew we would have to go to NICU and we weren’t sure if we could go there that late.

The nurse that came in happened to be Milly.

“Are you still up Lexi? I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone be up as much as you especially after delivering twins.”

“I think I have a bit of insomnia,” I said, somewhat shyly.

“Well, we’re going to have to give you something for that. You’re going to need sleep. You’ve got twins now. You won’t be able to stay up all night and then sleep all day like you may have before. You’ll be up all night and all day. Now, I’m not trying to scare you or anything. I’m just giving you the cold, hard truth,” she came over to my bed and pulled the covers over my stomach and started fluffing my pillows, “Take it from somebody who knows firsthand.”

“How do you know?” I asked.

“Many, many years ago, when I was exactly your age, 15, I had my first daughter,” she paused, “and my first son.”

“You had twins too?”

“Yes, I sure did. It’s crazy how things work, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, it is.”

“Now, I know how badly you want to see those two precious babies of yours, but you need rest. You just got done giving birth to twins. You’ve probably been up for a good 16 hours. I’ll go get you some sleeping pills and then you can see your babies first thing in the morning right after you wake up. How does that sound?”

“I guess it sounds ok.” I wasn’t very happy with her making me sleep but I knew she had the best intentions.

She left the room and when she came back, she had two sleeping pills and a small glass of grape juice.

“I hope you like grape juice. It’s all they had at this time of night.”

“It’s fine. Thank you.”

I took the sleeping pills and before I knew it, I was asleep. I had quit a few dreams that night. Some were good, some were bad, and I’m sure I didn’t remember a lot of them.

The next morning I woke up at 6:45. My mom was already there. She was sitting in one of the chairs playing with her phone. John was still sleeping.

I slowly sat up. My whole body was sore. It felt like I had been hit with a truck. “Good morning mom.”

“Well good morning honey. Did you sleep well?” She stood up from her chair and walked over to my bed and sat down. She started running her hand through my hair.
