NEW LIFE

Laura's POV

"I hate you! You are the meanest sister ever!" yelled Jacob as we exited the Gotham Toy Shop.

"Jacob stop being silly. Now come on, let's go home," I replied as nearby people started to stare. I grabbed his hand, but he quickly shrugged it off.

"NO! Leave me alone!" he screamed, sitting down on the pavement and crossing his arms.

"You know what? Fine. Stay here, starve to death. See if I care!" I shouted as I stormed off around the corner. My little brother Jacob was angry because I refused to buy him the new toy he had wanted for months, and had thrown one of his usual temper tantrums. I would just leave him there for a minute, before he came running back apologizing and-

That was when I heard the gunshot.

I quickly began to run back to the spot where I had left Jacob.

"Jacob? Jacob? Are you okay?" I yelled as I turned the corner just to see his lifeless body on the pavement, with a red hooded criminal running away into the distance with Jacob's blue backpack. I dropped down onto the floor beside Jacob.

"Jacob! I love you, I'm sorry. Please, please don't leave me..." I pleaded, tears streaming down my face.

"How could you do this, Laura?" my Mom asked, approaching me slowly.

"If you hadn't left him alone..." said Dad, following her. They had both tragically died in a terrible car accident when I was 12 and Jacob was only 2 years old.

"Mom, Dad. It's not my fault!" I sobbed, looking up at them for the first time. Their eyes were black and unforgiving.

"Murderer!" accused Dad, as he looked down at me.

"His blood is on your hands Laura, it's all your fault," said Mom.

"No, it wasn't like that, I..." I started, but I didn't know how to finish my sentence.  All my past friends began to surround me, scowls fixed on their cold, harsh faces.

"He was only 7 Laura!"

"He was your brother!"

"How could you?"

"MURDERER!" they all cried in unison as they began to close in on me.

"Please no! It wasn't like that, NO, NO!!!" I screamed as everything went black, and I was surrounded by darkness...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I woke up screaming,  I'd had the same nightmare for the past week.  Slowly calming down, I looked over at my alarm clock; It was 9:15. If I didn't hurry up, I would be late for my first day as a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum. I quickly took a shower, dragged a brush through my dark hair and went to pick out some clothes. I wanted to look as professional as possible for my first day, so I picked out a dark brown jumper, some black leggings and my UGG boots. Cautiously, I unlocked the safe from underneath my bed. From in there I retrieved my green and purple necklace that my parents had given to me before the accident. I had always worn it when I was nervous, it was like a comfort blanket. Locking the safe again, I walked into the hallway and looked in the mirror.

"This is it Laura. All the studying, the work, the tests, it all lead up to this. This is the first day of your new life," I said, trying to reassure myself. Grabbing my coat I took a deep breath, and began to walk out of my door. Unfortunately, I looked around to see rain pouring down in all directions. On the one day I was supposed to walk to work as my car was at the shop getting repaired. Just my luck.

Sighing, I started to put up my umbrella when I heard a loud car horn from behind to me. I turned around to see my best friend, Ben, sitting in his new car smiling at me.

"Hey Laura!" he called over to me.

"Hi Ben, loving the new car!" I smiled, walking towards Ben's new ride.

"Thanks. You want a ride?" he asked as he opened the car door.

"Sure, thanks," I replied as I sat down on the comfy leather seat next to him. As we began to set off there was an awkward silence for a minute as I worried over how today would go. What if I wasn't good enough? What if everyone hated me? And even worse, what if people knew about my past?

"Are you okay?" Ben asked turning the radio down.

"I'm just nervous, what if they're all smarter than me?" I answered looking down into my lap.

"Please. Laura, you're the smartest person I know. You'll fit right in, though I still don't know why the hell you want to work at Arkham with all the crazies..." Ben said chuckling quietly.

"Ben, you know exactly why. I'm just fascinated by those insane criminal minds! I want to get inside their heads and ask them all my questions and-"

"Well you do ask questions. ALOT." I laughed slightly at this. He was right, I did ask questions a lot. But it was only because as soon as I heard about something, I had to know every single last detail about it. People often got angry at me for asking them questions so frequently, but I didn't care.

"Here we are, Arkham Asylum," he announced as we pulled past the large gates that supposedly kept all of the prisoners inside, but it was never long before they all managed to escape.

"Thanks Ben, see you later," I said, stepping out of the car, and into the main doors of the asylum.

"Good luck, try not to get killed!" yelled Ben as he began to drive away. A small smile spread on my face, but it quickly disappeared as I looked up at the cold, grey building in front of me. I slowly took a deep breath, and stepped inside the doors of Arkham...
