It has become a part of common magical knowledge that the sorting hat takes the wearers request into account. This was not always so. When Severus Snape saw that Lily was sorted into Gryffindor, he too desired to be in the 'brawn over brain' house. His wash was not granted and he was sorted into Slytherin. The Sorting Hat realised years later that had he sorted Severus into Gryffindor, he never would have become a Death Eater and the Potters would still be alive.
