Truth Comes

The truth, they say will set you free,
And while I agree, we must not mistake it for being the sun on a cloudy day
when it takes all of the gloom away.
The truth may be liberating but it cannot be happy or carefree if it is in the business of breaking chains.
The truth is not happy, it is fierce.
Piercing the tense air before it
and leaving a cold air as it goes,
waking up everybody in its presence.
The truth cannot afford to be happy all the time, for so many people ignore it,
tosses it to the side or deliberately stifles it under moutains of lies.
Truth comes with earthquakes and thunderclaps,
Comes to fill in the gaps
that have gone missing,
returning lost children to their parents
and rescuing wandering pilgrims from where they have dared to go astray.
Truth comes with no time to waste
on mistakes and buried skeletons,
it leaves in its wake open hearts a little more sore but beating stronger than before.
It knows it is feared,
knows how people will leer at it,
reject its presence in the room,
call it the doom of man as they press it down
as far as they can.
But the truth comes nonetheless,
ready to fight for best and the worst of us, willing to endure long hard nights
and days full of sacrifice just to break iron
into the dust of dandelions.
The truth must bear the weight of itself knowing that it may do it alone.
And accepting that if it has to be fierce and cold to free slaves and break chains,
Then so be it.
