Chapter One Hundred & Twenty-Eight

The blood exited the wound I created on my wrist, going from my skin and dripping into the glass. I nodded to Marcel. "That should overcome it. The incantation I used creates a poison that my blood can heal well."

He nodded eagerly and drank the blood all in one go, then we both turned to Klaus. He had been watching us with a small amount of resentment. But of course, it didn't take much to anger that man.

"I bet they were all so impressed! Weren't they, hm? Your new mates?" Klaus asked angrily. "Positively taken by your boldness, your cunning wit, and your steely resolve."

I rolled my eyes, sighing in exasperation. "Klaus, I swear to god..."

He stood up. "And you just assumed that our dear Roseia would be perfectly willing to drain the blood from her veins in the aftermath!" he shouted, then moved a little closer to Marcel. "We cannot tell friend from foe, and what are you doing? You're pledging a fraternity run by those conspiring against us!"

"Klaus!" I hissed, and he turned to look at me. "Do you really want to bring up the subject of friend and foe, considering your past decisions?" I growled, grinding my teeth. "You are not one to judge Marcel for making the decisions he has, considering what you did to him only a few months before now."

Klaus gritted his teeth a little.

"My interest in the Strix is because of you," Marcel spat. "I don't get to choose sides! Whoever comes for you, comes for me. That's all I need to know."

Freya came to the doorway, and stood at it to watch us. "She's awake."

Klaus calmed a little, staring at Marcel with a regretful look in his eyes.

"Yes, whoever comes for me may very well come for you..." he said, walking a little closer. "But they may also come through you, Marcellus. Remember that."

With that being said, he walked out of the room. I sent Marcel a soft and apologetic smile, then followed after Klaus. I wanted to see what this witch had to offer us in terms of information.

We all met together in the courtyard, apart from Marcel. He stayed in the study.

"I'm sorry," she said to Lucien, who looked at her with an expression of willingness to forgive.

She had left his side and gone to help Tristan, but he didn't seem to care. He looked moreso happy that she was alright.

"I hoped I was wrong, Lucien, I really did... But I saw it," she looked over at Klaus, then down at her lap. "I saw him die."

I swallowed, glancing down at Niklaus before looking back at Alexis and Lucien.

"Did you see the weapon?" Lucien asked, and she nodded. "What is it?"

"To understand, it must be seen."

She held her arm up into the air, exposing her wrist for the person she wanted to take her blood. And she looked directly at me. I wasn't sure why she chose me to do it, but I didn't argue or question her decision, and went over to her. She gave Elijah the same look. I watched him closely as we both took one of her wrists, and he seemed just as unsure as I was. But even so, a moment later, we both sank our teeth into her skin.

The visions came in flashes. It went from images of a grimoire, to a disheveled dining room table, hands in a bowl of blood, paintings with blood splattered on them, the pieces of paper we had used burning, and then to Freya. Then it began to darken, and showed a vision of Lucien, then of a dark shadow.

We would have kept going, but I soon felt the blood begin to burn at my throat. My eyes shot open and I spat the blood out, my eyes widening. Elijah coughed beside me, gagging on the blood that still remained. It tasted like a mixture of iron and pure alcohol, the kind you put onto your wounds. It was horrific, and I knew exactly what it was.

"Someone poisoned her," I said, looking up at Lucien with a shocked expression.

Alexis gasped and started to cough before breathing heavily, then she vomited blood. She coughed repeatedly and Elijah moved away from her, while Lucien took his place.

"No," he repeated, saying that little word over and over. "No, no, no!"

Her breathing slowed, and so did her heartbeat. She sank into Lucien's arms, and he held her tightly, still saying no. He wasn't able to save her. He looked up at Klaus with an expression of anger, the fury likely placed towards Tristan, the man who had probably killed her.

But somehow, I knew that Lucien wasn't behind this. Something much more terrible, however, was.

I stayed with Hayley until Hope fell asleep. It had, apparently, been a rather difficult night. It was almost as if that child could sense when her family was in trouble.

"You know... I'll have to explain this family to her some day," she said, handing me a cup of coffee before taking a drink from my own glass.

I was still in my evening dress, but she didn't mind, and neither did I. I actually quite liked wearing it, which was odd. I didn't like dresses very much.

"Thank you," I said, then bit my lip a little. "That will be a rather interesting story, won't it?"

She nodded. "I think about that sometimes... How it might go."

"And how do you think it will turn out?" I asked her.

"I won't lie to her," she said. "I never will lie to her. But I think that after knowing you all for so long, I know what I'll start with."

I stayed quiet, and she sent me a soft and gentle smile before continuing.

"Always and forever."

I couldn't help but smile at that. She was a wonderful mother.

But the smile soon faded a little. "Hayley, I believe I should apologize, I... We, should have told you what was happening sooner. Especially with the Strix, and the lovely Tristan de Martel," I muttered, taking a drink of my coffee while remembering that man with resentment.

She smirked a little. "It's fine. People keep telling me about this guy though, maybe I should meet him. Get in the loop a little more."

I laughed. "Oh, trust me, Hayley. You're not missing out on much."
