Through that smile

She aches

As she laughs

She aches

As words of abuse are thrown at her

She ignores them

As she is ignored and left out

She acts no different

But she aches

As the scars of her past glare at her

She aches

When she is told that she is loved and cared for

She still aches

As she tries to block out the yelling and screams

She squeezes her eyes shut

As tears go streaming down her face

She imagines a time where she does not ache

Even as she tells herself that things will get better

She knows that they are lies

Even as she smiles, laughs, ignores

She still aches

Even as she acts indifferent, reminisces, and is lied to

She aches

She can block out the world as much as she wants

And she can cry ‘till she runs out of tears

But it all stays the same

In the end

She’ll always ache
