if you were to compare him to his old self, you would never believe that they're the same person. and that's because, he had changed so drastically — both physically and mentally. the smile that used to hang on his face every day without a fail was now replaced with a cold and expressionless face. the positive energy that used to radiate and brighten up everyone's day was now replaced with ever so pessimistic thoughts. the outgoing boy was now an extreme introvert. no matter how much the people around him tried to enter his world, he would always shut himself off from them and refuse to let them in, for he believed that they were only doing it out of pity.

jung hoseok was always the energiser and vitamin of the group, but one fatal accident turned his entire life around. he could still remember the memories of that day vividly — it was a rainy saturday afternoon and he was at the dance studio practising as usual. while dancing, he accidentally lost his balance and fell down. however, no one expected the fall to be so bad that he knocked his head. it just so happened that the part of his brain that controlled his vision was injured and from then on, he was deemed as a blind man forever. hoseok despised himself for bringing all these upon himself. he chose to stray away from his group of friends because he knew that he would only become a burden for them. but never did he know, that he would actually allow a girl to enter his life.

you were on the way to the canteen for lunch when you passed by the classroom next door. as you peeked in, you couldn't help but notice him again. you sighed as you walked into the classroom, placing a bottle of juice on his table.

"yah jung hoseok, i know you refuse to go out and eat but you can't starve yourself just because of that right? at least drink this juice so that you can have more energy."

although hoseok always refused to accept food from people whenever they saw that he stayed in class during breaks, he could sense that you truly cared about him.

"(y/... (y/n)-ah!" he called to you.

you spun your head around in surprise.

"thank you for this. i'll drink it well."

you were taken aback. it was the first time hoseok had actually thanked you despite you having done this countless times. you smiled to yourself. you were glad that he finally appreciated what you were doing for him, even though it wasn't that much.

ever since then, hoseok began opening up to you more and more. the two of you became the best of friends who would spend every moment possible together. the more you spent time with hoseok, the more you discovered about the hidden personality he had in him, and that he wasn't as bad as everyone had described him. unconsciously, you began to develop feelings for him.

"hoseok-ah! sorry i'm running a bit late, the bus was delayed."

"it's okay, i understand."

you had asked hoseok out since it was the school holidays and you knew that he would be bored since no one else would actually want to hang out with him. since he was kind of excited as it was first time going out in a while, he arrived at where you agreed to meet earlier.

when you arrived, hoseok was nowhere to be seen.

"hmm? didn't he say that he was already here?" you mumbled to yourself.

just then, as you were pacing around, you noticed something shiny lying on the ground. you picked it up and realised that it was the key chain that you gave to hoseok not long ago. since he loved it so much, he decided to carry it with him wherever he went. since he treasures this so much, why would he have dropped it? you thought to yourself. you noticed that something was wrong and decided to call him. however, even after constant ringings, he didn't pick up. you began to get worried. thankfully, you remembered that he had an app installed on his phone that allowed only certain people to be able to track his whereabouts in case something happened, which included you. you decided to make use of this and you tracked down the address that showed up.

after half an hour, you reached. it was a suspicious-looking abandoned warehouse that seemed untouched for years. you knew that hoseok would never come to such places without a good reason and immediately dashed in. despite being slightly afraid, you went into every room possible to see if he was there. and finally at the last room, you rushed in to find a weak and severely beaten up hoseok lying down on the floor helplessly.

"who... who did this to you?" you asked as tears were brought to your eyes.

before he could even reply, you heard some cackles from behind you. you turned around, only to see that it was the famous bullies from your school.

"how dare you do this to him?" you were extremely raged.

"oh, why not? i mean, look at him, he's such a coward that can't even fight back."

"you guys are the real cowards! you know that he can't fight back, yet you choose to bully him?"

"and what about you? why would you choose to stick around him when he's blind and can't even do anything for you?"

the bully strode towards hoseok and gave him more punches in the stomach. you looked on helplessly as you were held back by the other two of his buddies.

as a last resort to drive them away, you shouted in between wails, "i... i've already called the police!"

indeed, it worked. they escaped instantly, leaving the two of you behind. you called for an ambulance and hoseok was sent to the hospital. while he was being operated on, you couldn't help but feel nervous. after what seemed like eternity, the doctor finally emerged from the operation room.

"doctor... how is he? is he okay now?"

"we have treated all his wounds and he is fine as of now. but he is still unconscious and we can't be sure when he'll wake up. you may go and visit him now."

seeing hoseok lying on the bed with several parts of his body wrapped up in bandage, you broke down into tears. you felt like you were the one who inflicted this upon him and that if you weren't late, none of this would have happened.

a few days later
"mr jung... mr jung?"

hoseok slowly stirred to his senses as he saw that a doctor was waving his hand in front of him.

"wait... i can see now?"

"yes! can you see what number this is?" the doctor asked as he posed a number with his fingers.

"th... three?"

"great! your eyesight is perfect now."

"but... why all of a sudden? what... what happened?"

"oh i almost forgot... this is for you."

the doctor handed hoseok a letter and exited the room afterwards.

to. hoseok
if you're reading this now, it means that you can finally see, right? congratulations!
you must be wondering why your sight is restored suddenly... i'm the one who donated my corneas to you. despite the doctors' strong opposition, i was insistent on my decision. i know that you too, would have disagreed. i just couldn't help but feel sorry for what happened to you. it's as if it was all my fault. also, i couldn't bear to see you suffer anymore just because you're blind.
oh, and please don't bother looking for me. i have already moved to somewhere far away. knowing you, you would definitely come looking for me after reading this. but I really don't want you to feel indebted to me. this is the only thing i can do for you to lead a better life. with your new pair of eyes, i hope that you can make good use of them and explore this world as much as you want like never before.
goodbye, and i love you.
from. (y/n)

hoseok crumbled the letter with his fists as tears flowed out of his eyes.

"why... just why did she have to give up everything just for me?" he weeped.
