Your Boyfriend

Friday comes around
before I even realize it.
I'd told my parents
and Euni and Thias
earlier on in the week
that I was going over
to a friend's house
to help her with homework,
so on Friday morning,
my mom surprised me with,
"About what time
will you be home
for dinner, honey?"
It's only then that
I remember everything
that had happened on Tuesday,
and the promise I'd made
to help Natalia with
her Brit Lit assignments.
I'd almost completely forgotten -
how, I have
absolutely no idea,
but forget it I had.

After throwing a guesstimate
out at my mother, I
hurry out the door
after my siblings.

The day goes by
too fast for my liking.
At the end of home ec,
Natalia tells me to
wait outside in
the student lot for her
while she runs to her locker,
which is on the opposite side
of the school.
Mine is on the way,
so it's no surprise to me
that I get there first.

The parking lot is already
nearly empty, a result
of the average student's haste
to get away from this hell
we all know as school.
I normally
am of the same opinion,
but my ride obviously
isn't getting me out of here
fast enough for my liking.

Just as I'm thinking that,
I hear voices
from behind me
as the doors swing open,
revealing a laughing group
of juniors and seniors.
I recognize Natalia
at the forefront of it,
chatting away with the
football jocks,
who seem bent on
taking away her personal space.
But if she notices that,
she doesn't let on.
Instead, when she
catches sight of me,
she calls a farewell to them
and leans in
to place a kiss on
the nearest footballer's cheek.

I can't help but notice
that it's not the same guy
whom she kissed up
on top of the bleachers
a couple months ago.

"You ready?"
she asks me
as she pulls out her
car keys.
"Sorry it took so long -
Manny and his friends
were being pests."
But as negative a connotation
as her words have,
she only laughs as if
it really doesn't matter
to her.

"Your boyfriend?"
I ask
before I can help myself.
A sick feeling
is starting to form
in my gut.
I attribute it to
the leftovers I'd brought
for lunch today -
I just knew that
Mom hadn't cooked the pork
the whole way through.
Or at least,
that's what I'm telling myself.

Natalia looks just
the slightest bit surprised
by my question.
"Well,"
she says thoughtfully,
"yeah, sure.
If you can call
someone you've dated
for only a week
your boyfriend."

But before she can
elaborate further, or I
can ask what she means,
she flings open
the driver's side door
and throws herself in.
"Come on, buddy,"
she jokes.
"This homework isn't
gonna finish itself,
now is it?"

And seeing as I
have nothing better to do
in the situation, I
get in after her,
and we're soon roaring
down the street
away from the school.

This is a little shorter than normal, I know. I had a lot going on yesterday, so I only just finished writing this, lol. Oh well.
